Need help choosing gun for my wife

I would like to elicit 'the experts advice' here in the forum. My wife is working on obtaining her CCW, but we also need to find her a suitable firearm and I'd like to see if there are either women out here, or husbands with wives that carry, who can provide some recommendations.

For starters my wife is a Lefty, so ambidextrous controls are a must. Secondarily, she has really long and thin fingers so interchangeabl ackstraps would be nice, but not a deal breaker. Lastly she will more than likely carry inside her purse, so a compact size is probably a requirement.

She can shoot well and likes .40 as opposed to 9mm. I'm super jazzed to have her start carrying along with me, however I want to make sure to size up the 'right' firearm that fits her the best. Any recommendations are welcome.

Put the Springfield Armory XDm Compact 3.8 at the top of the list you hand her. Once you give her the list, leave her completely alone and let her decide for herself which weapon suits her best.

I realize it's only 9mm, but she ought to try the M&P Compact. My wife has been really happy with hers, and she's able to shoot solid tight groupings with it. I like it so much I may get one for when I want to carry something smaller and lighter than my P226.

It would probably be best if she is the one to pick her own handgun. Be there to help explain the pros and cons of each one she looks at but don't make the decision for her. What her idea of the right pistol and your idea of the right pistol may be widely different.

Take her to your local gun store and have her try various makes and models to determine what "she" like best in her hand that is comfortable. If she has a couple of choices, see if the local range has them to rent and try them.

I agree with all replies and thank you. The intent is to narrow the list a little, but at the end of the day, it absolutely is her decision. She gets overwhelmed with too many choices, so a 'top 5' or so is intended, with the knowledge that if none work out, we broaden the list.

If you have the opportunity to let her try shooting several different models and choose, that would be best. All the guns mentioned above are good choices. I would add the Walther PPS to that list as well. Comes in either .40 or 9mm, and comes with different size backstraps. Light, slim, and very concealable.

Do you pick out her bras? A weapon choice for someone else is akin to shopping for their underwear.

Wow, a lot of wise men out there. Count me as +1000 for encouraging the wife to choose. Having said that, I'm sure she'd value your opinion in helping her narrow down the choices. I cannot get my wife to look at a revolver. However, we spent quite a bit at a gun counter before she settled on an HK P2000sk. A woman was working behind the counter and she gave some good advice. Because of the polymer frame and small size, the HK proved 'snappy' for her, so we figured she needed a full size 9mm with a steel frame and slide. Turned out the MRI Baby Eagle got the nod. In both cases, I helped her define the characteristics that she would want, and she tried the ones that fit the characteristics to see which one she liked.

First of all, I would to say 'Thank You' to those members that actually provided valid feedback and read my original question. To those people, I am grateful.

To the rest who simply ranted at me, I would like to state that I am simply appalled at the callous nature of the responses. As a new member here, it is disturbing to experience this kind of unabashed bias, when it is in fact, MY WIFE who has asked ME to help HER in narrowing down the choices. This is definately the last time I will use this forum for any kind of assistance. Please don't bash people for their questions when in reality, they might be looking for advice and NOT OPINION!

I was surprised myself at the number of nasty responses you received, jblyth - the title of your post is a little misleading, but once the actual post itself is read it is clear you are not the one who will be making the final decision! But then, perhaps I understood because I just went through this process as well. I am new to concealed carry and immediately turned to my significant other for advice because of his shooting and concealed carry experience. I told him what I thought I wanted and we started our search.

In the meantime - just this past weekend in fact - we took his newest acquisition out to the range, a Glock 19, and when it was my turn to shoot it was love at first shot. I had one of my own two days later. Not a very scientific method to be sure, but in this case it worked out. It's fairly small without being too compact, has very little recoil, holds 15 rounds and really isn't much bigger than the sub-compacts I had thought I wanted.

Put the M&P40c on the list. It has ambi controls and the mag release can be swapped left or right and it comes with three interchangeable back straps.
I have the full size with ambi safety as well.

To all the posters that said the wife MUST be the one that selects her own handgun, my cheers to you. This is a personal decision, and like most us, have changed as our lives changed. Who here has only one handgun? I'm sure there are some, but I'm sure there are many that have more than one. Your knowledge and experience can help her make that decision, but the best thing she can do is try different handguns and find out what she likes and what she can deal with well.

Good luck to her on her decision and good luck to you being by her side when she does.

I'm sorry, I didn't read all the posts, and now I'm seeing that you want a list.

They make Glock (Gen 4's) that have a mag release that is interchangeable. If you like Glock and there is one that her fingers work around, that would be my first choice. In most calibers they make a full-size, compact and some sub-compacts... so she will have a variety of choices.
For the same reasons I would also look at the Springfield XD line up of handguns.

good luck to both of you.

Mine carrys a glock 27 , she is also a lefty the glock 27 seems great for left handers as long as she can handle the small .40.

EDIT: its a gen 4
