Need advice in New Jersey, permit issues

I have one of those issue where I feel as if the Police are trying to shame/smear me into not getting a handgun permit.

I live in NJ. I started the process on July 1 2012 and here it is today August 2 2012. I finally get a call that says "every thing looks good" but a littering issue, that I cleaned, is forcing them to visit random neighbors and call my boss just to see if it's okay that I get a firearm. I won't pull punches and sugar coat: I came home to maintenance having left their pile of trash right in front of my door. I called waited, called again and in the end returned the trash to their front door. This was a year ago. I don't even think there is a complaint, the cops knocked on the door, we actually had a good conversation. They offered me a ticket for littering which a considered taking, or go clean it up. I cleaned up but called it a non violent protest.

I'm 36 years old. I have a perfect record, I don't even have any speeding tickets. Why do I feel like I'm being smeared? I feel like they want everyone to know a monster now lives in the neighborhood. I feel like how they go door to door when a pedophile comes to town. And I have a constitutional right to own a firearm. (If I inherited a gun nobody would ask questions)

MIND YOU THIS. I live in an apartment complex. I live with my girlfriend. In my area there are 6 units in a pod. Some of these units have revolving doors (figuratively speaking). These people are around 3 months and out. Why would the Police randomly seek out one of these units and announce to these people that "Oh by the way, there's might be a firearm in that unit". I live near Camden, are you nuts? You just gave someone a target that otherwise would not have been there.

Now, they want to call my boss also to see if I'm a threat. I'm not a threat, but also I don't know my boss's position on guns (I think he wouldn't mind but that's not the point) Wouldn't you feel a little odd if the Police called YOU and starting double checking? Why is my job being brought into this other than to smear me at work. Potentially every joke is now going to be looked at as a threat.

I feel like I'm being pushed out of this. I already had two people fill out forms, why do I feel like I have to get permission from people who may give answers merely based upon their gun views? I just can't get over why they want to bring my job in to this.

I'm actually considering pausing my request, but I will never withdraw it.

Here are my questions:
1 - Is this just how it is in NJ or am I being treated unfairly?
2 - Should they be able to reach out to my boss?
3 - It was something so small and stupid as far as the trash thing, and I didn't sugar coat it to them either.
4 - I have piles of integrity, why roll my application for a permit on the chances of some transient who is home and answers the door when the police do a live visit?

Jonny,

You’re not being treated any different than the state of NJ treat any gun owner. NJ is one of the most anti gun states I’ve lived in. Even as a concealed permit holder from the state of Alaska, where I moved from, NJ would not issue me a permit. I didn’t pursue the issue because I knew I would not live in NJ for more than four years.

I lived in NJ from ’03 to ’07 and had to give up my Alaska permit, I now live in WV and had no problem getting a concealed carry permit.

I wish you the best of luck.

I mean I'm okay with my boss knowing...he'll probably make me take him to a firing range. It just bothers me that they would even have to bring him into this.

As for telling perfect strangers...let me put it to you this way. I do not live in a "Brady Bunch" neighborhood. Some nights, it's like "Boyz in Da Hood". The last thing I need is for the Police to tell the wrong people where they can find a free firearm if they look hard enough. Next thing you know, the worst has happened because some one came looking for it. That is the part that is causing me anxiety.

Move to DE or PA and pay less taxes...have more freedom...pump your own gas....be made fun of less...There is a reason it is free to get in and you need to pay a toll to get out...worth every penny...
