Good Day All,

My Family, and I are coming to Illinois (Great Lakes) Area for our Sons Graduation. I'am Legally Allowed to Carry through Ohio, and Indiana.

I understand once in Illinois, I must put My weapon in an Locked Case Unloaded, and Unaccessable to myself Like Locked in Drunk.

Is this Statement True?

Congratulations and my thanks to your son for serving.
This is a link to the Illinois State Police pamphlet on transporting in Illinois.
www.isp.state.il.us/docs/1-154.pdf

Quote from the pamphlet:
IF A NON-RESIDENT IS VISITING ILLINOIS,
HUNTING, OR TRAVELING THROUGH WITH
A FIREARM, HOW DO THEY LEGALLY
TRANSPORT IT?
Non-residents must be legally eligible to possess
or acquire firearms and ammunition. Non residents
are not required to have an Illinois FOID Card. It is
recommended that in order to be in compliance with all
statutes, non-residents transport all firearms:
1. broken down in a non-functioning state; or
2. not immediately accessible; or
3. unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying
box, shipping box, or other container.

Correct on IL, depending on the state you might be good. Another thing to look at is staying in WI (kenosha area). Again all depends on what state your from.

If you keep it in your trunk, you are still going to have an issue........reason being, you cannot bring it on base even locked in a case and unaccessable. That means leaving it in the hotel. If your car gets searched going on base you'll be charge with a federal crime.

Partly true... your statement would be true if your were traveling THROUGH Illinois and NOT staying over. If you stay the night than you would be in violation of Illinois law when taking the Federal Owners Protection Act (FOPA) into context as well. From the NRA-ILA website:

Under FOPA, notwithstanding any state or local law, a person is entitled to transport a firearm from any place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry it, if the firearm is unloaded and locked out of reach. In vehicles without a trunk, the unloaded firearm must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. Ammunition that is either locked out of reach in the trunk or in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console is also covered.
Travelers should be aware that some state and local governments treat this federal provision as an “affirmative defense” that may only be raised after an arrest. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has also recently held that FOPA’s protections only apply while the firearm is not readily accessible to the traveler, and that a firearm is readily accessible during a hotel stay.

In the Draconian state of Illinois, you would be considered a visitor of the state, not one who was "passing through" and therefore, you are in illegal possession of a firearm.

I agree, and I, family and friends no longer schedule travel, shopping trips, meetings, and vacations in Illinois due to this. Sorry you have to go there - good luck to you.

And it is sure to disappear leaving it in the hotel room unless they have safes

Yes and no, The best thing to do is call GLNTC and ask the Master at Arms what the base policy is of visitors. Otherwise yes I would find a hotel that has a safe in the room and securing it there.

I was stationed at Great Lakes for around four years as a student and as a staff instructor.

Great Lakes is located in crime ridden North Chicage a real crap hole.

The MAA at Great Lakes will NOT allow you to bring a gun on the base.

Without a FOID card you can not bring the gun into Illinois except if just passing through.
