National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act of 2012” introduced in U.S. Senate
Today, March 13, U.S. Senators Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) introduced S. 2188, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2012.” The bill is the Senate companion to H. R. 822, which was approved by the U. S. House last November by a vote of 272-154.

Ok lets try again. As the OP stated a National Reciprocity bill has been introduced in thr US Senate. The last time National Reciprocity passed the US Senate in 2009 it did so with 58 ayes but to overcome parlimentry rules it would have taken 60 votes. Since then thanks to the 2010 elections the makeup of the Senate has changed making final passage likely. As reported the House has already passed it, so likely it will reach Obama. He MIGHT sign it IF he needs reelection votes, OR if the bill is attatched to another bill he wants like the National Parks carry law was. He did sign that law. It is too bad that some normally pro-gun groups are spreading falsehoods and distortions about this bill. This is a good bill that needs to become law. The NRA supports this bill (as I do) but rather that accept their word (or mine), READ THE BILL FOR YOURSELF! You will see that it is a good law for gun owners and is nothing like what the 'doom and gloom' people claim. Your rights should not stop at the state line. Contact your Senators to urge their support.

I'm not understanding why everyone is jumping on this bill like it's a good thing.

Allowing the feds to dictate where we can carry means that a changing tide (in Congress) could allow the gov't to say CCW only applies to the state you received it in. Then we'd be much worse off than we are today.

No sir -- I don't like this one bit. Let the states make deals with each other and keep this a state's rights issue. All we're doing with this bill is making the federal gov't bigger.

I've read the bill. It's the federal gov't saying where we can carry our guns. If they "allow" us to carry them, then by golly they can "un-allow" it down the road.

States don't have rights?! They had them before the 10th Amendment, but the purpose of the 10th amendment was to explicitly spell it out! In the last few years, the majority of states have introduced resolutions to reaffirm the principles of sovereignty under the 10th amendment. While they weren't meant to be laws, these resolutions were meant to tell the federal gov't to stop its practice of assuming powers and imposing mandates upon the states -- kind of like this bill here!

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

(Addited) mrjam2jab: Just realized the states right quote from you was in your signature and your message likely wasn't a reply to mine at all. Sorry about that!

I don't think you understand the bill. There is no federal control except to say that all states except Ill must accept another state's permit.

Well, I'm concerned about the unattended consequences that come with just about every law. Hawaii has said they will consider getting rid of their ccw law so they don't have to recognize other states permits.

The bill simply says the states recognize licenses from other states. Like driver's licenses. My license to carry should be recognized in all states. My driver's license is.

What the heck is good about ANOTHER law about that which there "SHALL NOT" be any about? Even IF this somehow makes it a little better than it is right now, IT IS STILL AN INFRINGEMENT!!!! (on more than just one Amendment)

I already cancelled my membership in GOA over this bullcrap.. .and the ONLY "Law" or "Legislation" I will stand behind/fight for with a clear conscience is one that calls for a COMPLETE eradication of ALL firearms laws....... Anything less is still a compromise, no matter how pretty it is dressed....

I'm not sure yet where I stand but I disagree a little with what you said. It is very difficult to get things repealed once they pass in this country so the likelyhood of this passing and then getting repealed to a vague something that would be "much worse off than we are today" type of scenaio is very very unlikely.

I definitely don't want the fed bigger and they are far to big and useless as it stands. HOWEVER, and its a big one, our constitutional right to carry should not vary from state to state. Our rights are nationwide and we should not let each state have any control over our basic rights as US citizens. We wouldn't want states taking liberties with our freedom of speech, religious expression etc.

As responsible gun owners we should be attempting to expand our right to carry to fit with our constitutional rights. If we can expand and improve state laws with regards to carry then great. if we can expand our rights to carry at the federal level even better.
Thanks,
Mspt
