N.I.C.S. Number question

I apologize for being bit new to this, but I have made a couple firearm purchases recently, and one dealer gave me my N.I.C.S. number and instructed me to keep it safe. The other did not. Couple of questions:

1. Do you get a different number each time they run a background check?

2. Is the dealer obligated to give it to you at each purchase?

The first transaction was for two handguns and a rifle (did not give), and the second was for a rifle only (wrote it on my receipt).

Thanks!

I work at a place that sells firearms and I've sold many guns. The dealer is NOT required to give it to you unless you get deny. At that point you need the NTN # for the appeals process. And I belive it changes every time you buy a gun NTN stands for N.I.C.S transaction number so new transaction new number.

I live in South Carolina and I've never received a number from a background check. After I got my CWP they stopped doing background checks at all, they just write my permit number on the paperwork.

NOLA is correct. There is a specific NTN assigned to each transaction. The only time you will need it is if you are denied and are going to request an appeal of the decision. Per Title 28, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 25.9(b)(1), (2), and (3), the NICS Section must destroy all identifying information on allowed transactions prior to the start of the next NICS operational day. If a potential purchaser is delayed or denied a firearm and successfully appeals the decision, the NICS Section cannot retain a record of the overturned appeal. I
