My wife and I have been together for 19 years. During this time I have owned a few handguns as well as hunting rifles and shotguns. For 19 years I have always asked her if she wanted to go hunting or shooting with me, and her reply has always been, "ummmm....no". She has never been against anybody going hunting and owning guns, realizing our right to bear arms, but shooting has never been her deal. It just never tripped her trigger, floated her boat, flipped her switch. But the last 19 years together, watching the news, seeing the tragedies of whackos gunning down innocent people in malls, schools, etc. has finally got to her. The recent tragedy in Connecticut was her tipping point. So last night she asked me to take her to the store to buy a new gun...for her. What's more is that her sister and mother wanted to go to the gun store so that THEY could buy guns also! What?? This coming from the woman who would make comments like, "How many guns do you need? You only have 2 hands", and, "you want ANOTHER gun? Why?"
What she ended up getting as her very first gun, is a Ruger LCR .22 revolver. I personally would have liked her to get a larger caliber, but I know her well enough that the recoil from something larger would turn her off and she wouldn't want to go out and shoot and would end up with a gun that never left the gun safe. I explained to her that she would need to practice, practice, practice with a small caliber for shot placement. I believe that I made the right decision to get her started with a small caliber with a simple design as a revolver over a semi. Easy to load, shoot, and clean. If there is a misfire, just simply pull the trigger again for the next round. Also very cheap ammo. She is excited to go out to the range with her sister and mother and their new guns along with brother-in-law(who is experienced)on Tuesday to shoot their new guns. I am only bummed that I can't go with them...I work retail and it is the Christmas season so time off is not going to happen. Anyway, long story, but this is exciting!! 3 new guns in the past week: S&W SD9 VE; Ruger LCR .22; and Ruger LC9.
