January 26, 1876: San Francisco, California, A young boy at the Lincoln Primary School accidentally shot himself while playing with a pistol under his desk. His fingers were badly hurt, and he received a flesh wound to his leg. The Principal, Miss Kate Sullivan sent him home in the hopes that his parents will teach him to be a little more careful when handling firearms.

What, no calls for banning guns? Then, just as today, there are legitimate reasons for citizens to possess firearms without government interference. The primary one is to protect ourselves from an oppressive government. Then, just as today, there were parents who did not do due diligence in training a boy the proper respect and how to use a firearm. You can bet in 1876 there were many kids the same age as this boy who not only knew to respect a firearm but knew how to use it safely. As you said, kids haven't changed.
