My daughter found this...

While cleaning her room, my daughter found this that one of her teachers gave her and she forgot to pass on. I never met the teacher, so this was extra nice. For any of you that are not veterans, know that little things like this are appreciated.

I should add that the reason I posted this is that she no longer teaches at the school, and after not being able to contact her and show my appreciation I just wanted to share it with someone.

I never know how to react to random strangers "thanking me for my service"
Please just smile and say "You are welcome." knowing there are still good people in this country who understand and appreciate the sacrifice. Because when you acknowledge the thanks you affirm the respect that is felt for those who serve.

To all who have served and are currently serving:

My wife and I thank you for everything you have done, and are doing, so our old butts can live in relative safety and comfort. There aren't words to express how much we appreciate your efforts, your sacrifice, and your willingness to put your life on the line.

Sometimes it was just knowing that we were doing it for something other than our "awesome" salaries... When we were deployed, on holidays the Command used to bust out a box of letters from school classes or boy/girl scout troops and pass 'em out. They were 'thank you for your service" letters probably collected before we sailed, but they definitely boosted morale, and almost never went unanswered.

I think that what helped most was hearing from the wife things people had done while I was gone, whether it was inviting her to dinner, helping fix the lawn mower or whatever. No matter how tough our deployment might be on us, it can't compare to what the family had to deal with.
