Multiple Threats: The Situation That Concerns Me the Most

This video is from a jewelry store about 15 minutes from my home. The hoodies carjacked someone in Atlanta and drove close to an hour to pull this caper:

.
There aren't many training classes near me that I am aware of, and I was curious if anyone could point me to any online training materials or drills that deal with engaging multiple targets. I'm confident in my situational awareness and ability to deal with most single threats, but what do instructors advise when confronted by multiple threats? Do nothing and hope for the best? Engage and hope nobody panics and runs into your fields of fire? Watching the video, the opportunity I see would be to target the one waving the gun first, and put down the one attempting to smash the display cases second.

It depends.

Not the answer you want, just the one that fits reality. What you do, priority of targeting and maneuver, is going to depend on things like number of assailants, their position in relation to you, which of them is armed and what they are armed with. You don't necessarily take the closest one first, you don't necessarily take the armed one(s) first. It will depend.

Rule of thumb is 'boarding house rules': Everyone gets one serving before anyone gets seconds. So rule of thumb is one shot to each attacker. That is not a hard and fast rule, though.

It gets worse if there are others in proximity.

In the situation in the video still: Where are you? That could determine your initial action, even whether you fire at all or not. Give me a starting position on this one.

Other situations: It depends.

If you can find a range in your area that conducts IDPA matches, that is a good way to gain the type of training and experience you are seeking in adage controlled environment.

IDPA is a game and in no way shape or form can it be considered to be anything but a game, IDPA should never be considered to be a substitute for SD training, for SD training you need to get with a professional SD trainer and train often.
YMMV

Thanks for the link. They are only about 80 miles away from me, and their Tactical Handgun classes are just what I need. It's funny, because I was looking at this on my laptop and my wife wanted to check it out. Now, she wants to take their "ladies only" pistol class.

You've got 2 Suarez International instructors in the Atlanta area. The Link Removed is preliminary, but CRG-2 is an excellent place to start your reality based training for multiple adversaries and shooting while busting off the X.

Yes. Go to the Personal Defense Network website (google it. PDN) and look at the videos Rob Pincus sells there. These videos are outstanding for training when you can't do it in person.

CRG-2 will have a module that deals with multiple attackers in the course. Look also for FOF and 0-5 Feet in the SI schedule. These will contain multiple-attacker content as well.

There is no replacement for training and practice. That said, the training videos and such can help you learn some fundamentals, thought processes, etc.. everything adds to the whole of your understanding.
