Having read the posted forums over the past years, we noted on many occasions that the subject of “multiple carry”
has been mentioned, discussed, and left as an option for readers. While some may feel comfortable with carrying their
primary firearm that can do serious harm, some may feel compelled to carry another smaller caliber discretely hidden
away as in a back pocket or in an ankle holster. While this may sound like a good backup plan, it is advisable for CC
individuals to check their state laws, as well as the laws of states that have reciprocity with their issuing state as
to how many firearms one may legally carry on their person at any time. Here in New Mexico (being an open carry
state as well), state laws are specific on how many sidearm’s one may have on one’s person. We submit the relevant
state statute …
New Mexico Department of Public Safety … § 29-19-6 …
(4) the category and the largest caliber of handgun that the licensee is licensed to carry, with a statement
that the licensee is licensed to carry smaller caliber handguns but shall carry only one concealed handgun at any given time.

Furthermore, the New Mexico Concealed Carry Act, § 10.8.2.20, has a provision that may not be to CC carrying individual’s
liking if a LEO determines that the individual is, in fact, “double packing”, especially if the individual is asked to produce
their license and display their firearm. If the individual attempts to reveal only one firearm, but the LEO learns that you are
carrying a second firearm, this provision kicks in:
A. Authority to disarm. A peace officer acting in the lawful discharge of his official duties is authorized to disarm a licensee
at any time the peace officer has probable cause to believe it is necessary for the protection of the licensee, peace officer,
or other individual. The peace officer shall return the handgun to the licensee before dismissing the licensee from the scene
when the peace officer has determined that the licensee is not a threat to himself, the peace officer, or other individuals,
provided that the licensee has not violated any provision of this act or this rule, or committed any other violation which
could result in arrest …. etc.
B. Authority to confiscate license. A peace officer may confiscate a license if the licensee has violated any provision of
the act or this rule, or committed any other violation that could result in arrest of the licensee … etc.
Best to learn ahead of time what you issuing state allows as well as any state that you transit in your travels. We learned
of an individual in northern New Mexico that had their license confiscated because they were “double packing” (not sure of the situation
regarding the handguns; possibly returned after a hearing). That individual’s license was revoked for a year; after which, he had
to reapply for a CC license, a tedious process. So the issue remains … is “double packing” worth it? Is it added security or paranoia?
Lastly … is it legal?
