Multiple calibers of ammunition?

What is everyone's thought on having multiple handguns with different calibers? My concern is that I have 22, 380, 9mm, 45, and 44 caliber firearms. I am in the process of trading my 357 for another 45. Considering today's ammo market, would I be wise to further downsize my caliber variety?

The more the merrier. You don't have to shoot it just cuz you have it - but the more variety you have, the more likely you can find ammo to use.

I've collected handguns over the years. My main rotation is 9mm,40 sw and 45 acp....I have plenty of ammo in each caliber. But I won't go to the range until I can replace what I shoot. Just incase. I have a 357mag also. I see all kinds of 38 in the store. So I bought some just to get my fix. I also did some skeet shooting. All kinds of shotgun shells.JME

I agree with others. I have handguns in .22/.22mag, 9mm, .40 S/W, .38 special/.357 mag. I have target, HP, personal protection and shotshells (in limited quantities). With the latest ammo rush as evidence, there have been some places I can find one but not other calibers. That way I do not have all my eggs in one basket, so to speak. I will always have something to maintain my CC and personal protection. I have 4 handguns I can use as CC covering all the calibers except .22. In addition, I have a 12 ga I can use for home defense if needed. I have rifles in .556/.223, .30-.30 and .22 if I need to keep the BG at distance from me. I constantly am trying to replace any I use at the range. With this duplication, I can ensure I won't be helpless because I only have one caliber and can't get ammo. If you downsize be sure you have more than one caliber you can shoot is my recomendation.

Thanks everyone for all the comments. I appreciate it. I just traded my 357 revolver for a Glock 21 gen 3. I was mostly thinking about trading out my 380, but I really like it for the times I need to pocket carry.

I personally built my modest collection with diversity in mind. With different calibers chances are you will have a tool suitable for every job.

I am also of the mind that you should keep a diversity of calibers on hand. Sometimes its harder to get one or the other, but you should always be able to get at least one caliber of ammunition. I just wish I had at least a thousand rounds of each type... just for posterity's sake, of course. :o)

I love the .38/.357. other than .22lr, probably the most common ammo in the U.S. Power levels from mild to wild. BTW, I love .45ACP also.
The more calibers you have, the more likely you are to find ammo you can use.

Variety is good, it gives you multiple calibers for multiple uses and allows you the ability to purchase one caliber when another is hard to find. If you're not a collector than you would probably want to keep it modest though. I have handguns in .22lr, .25acp, .22wmr, .32acp, .380acp, 9mm, .38Spl and .45acp... I shoot some a lot more than others so I store some calibers in much greater quantities. If you want an off the wall caliber or an obsolete one, you should get into reloading. I'd love to have an old Webley in .455 but ammo is rare and expensive so I've held off on trying to find one.

The more calibers the better. But Always keep a caliber that is common with leo's of all stripes.

I use a .32 a .380 and a 9mm all for carry at different times. Trust them all. I see no problem with different calibers as long as you know they are dependable and you can shoot them well.

I do believe everyone should have 1 or 2 favorite guns that they shoot best and just like better than the rest. I have no different guns for home defense or carry. My carry guns will shoot you just as well whether in my home or somewhere else.

So it all boils down to what you can handle and your opinion on it. I do believe if you want a gun or two to shoot a lot then you get a .22 or 9mm for cheaper ammo, or else learn to reload.
