Moving To NY / long Island

Hey guys, I'm moving to Long Island, and realized the my FL ccw is not good in NY. In fact, I was reading, that I need a permit to have a handgun in my own house? :wacko: is that true???

As of right now, I'm going to be staying in Delaware (which has an outstanding reciprocity) and spending two days / one night in NY every week (hotel). Can I keep a loaded gun in the trunk of my car? howbout inside the hotel? :hang3:

You may not possess a pistol in NY state without a NY permit, except in the case of attending an officially sanctioned (e.g. NRA-sponsored or similar) pistol competition for a short period. Loaded in your trunk or hotel is risking arrest and being charged with a felony; if that happens, forget about getting a permit ANYWHERE. NY doesn't recognize ANY other states' permits. Even having it with you unloaded and disassembled is a violation if you don't have a permit.

NY is amongst the worst 5 states for pistol restrictions, and I've heard that Long Island is no picnic, but the worst place is the city (5 boroughs). If you have to pass through NYC you'd better research the regulations first. I suggest that you check on Handgunlaw.us which has a plethora of information.

It can take 3 to 6 months to obtain a NY permit once you are resident. You should probably store your pistols with a friend or gunshop out of state until you get your permit. (This is what I had to do). Also each county in NY has different policies about how long you have to live there to establish residency for purposes of obtaining a permit. Additionally you have to supply 3 or 4 references, and these usually have to be people in the county in which you are residing. I repeat, it's no picnic.

how about a shotgun? If I end up living in long Island... could I have a shotgun in my apartment without any permit? :fie:

So far shotguns and long guns are not restricted, and NY has instant background checks so you can purchase a shotgun or rifle with no delay. There is also not the ridiculous "assault weapon" definitions that Californians have to put up with. However with any semiauto (pistol or rifle) you are limited to a 10 round magazine, and violating that is a 3rd class felony. Not good.

NYers just dodged the microstamping requirement by a hair - it passed the Assembly but failed in the Senate. The proponents (including the king of Nanny Government, NY Mayor Bloomberg) vow to keep bringing it back. UGH....

What sucks is that I have been a gun owner for 40 years, was military trained, and have absolutely no blemishes on my record, not even a misdemeanor DUI or youth offense. I still could only obtain a restricted permit that covers recreational use only. (However that is rather broadly defined by most people). A relative that is a church deacon and frequently has to carry large sums of money was recently denied a request to remove his restriction. It's totally up to one individual - the pistol permit official, a judge - and his decisions are never overturned. And I live in one of the more permissive counties, if you can believe it!

New York was hubby & my old stomping grounds! Might has well hang it up. Yes you have to have a permit just to have a gun in your home! No its not good for carry out side the home!Thats another permit completely! And you need to jump thou all sorts of loops to get one to carry! I can't remember all the laws we left there 26+ years ago! We also swore we'd never return! The laws the taxes suck! If we did still live there some one would be bailing our butts out of jail for one thing or another! Its worse than California with a close second! but thats because we did live there! man I wish you a whole lot of Luck!

It may have changed, but you used to, in the city, IF you had a permit, your pistol had to be listed on the permit.. That means if you purchase a new pistol, or sell an old pistol your permit has to be updated..
I moved from the NY area 13 years ago.. I have NO desire to return!!!
IF you don't absolutely HAVE to move there.. DON"T.. You will be taxed to death and get little to nothing for it.. Example.. When I left, it cost $7.00 to cross a bridge (going and coming).. And that's OK I guess, but the bridge had not been painted in 40+ years. Now mind you, I was not the only one crossing the bridge, there are 10's of thousands crossing the bridge every day.. Where does all that $$$ go.. Think about it.. Let's say 10,000 cars pass over the bridge a day ( I think that is a low estimate).. That's $70,000 a day.. times 7 (a week) that's $490,000/week, times 52 (a Year) that's about $25.5 Million a year for One bridge, there are multiple toll bridges in the city.. You have $25 million a year and you can't paint the bridge in 40+ years???
WTF happens to all that $$$???
Sorry, I'll get off my soap box.. IF you have to go.. Start making plans to leave as well!!!

I agree with the above posters, people are trying to move out of NY, not move in.
