Moving to MI from Texas with CCW permit

I just got my CCW in Texas about 4 months ago and just found out we are being relocated to Michigan in July. Since Michigan has reciprocity with Texas and I got my permit as a Texas resident do I need to take the certification class again in Michigan or can I just continue to use my Texas permit?

Here is an excerpt from the Michigan law that pertains to your situation.

(b) The applicant is a citizen of the United States or is an alien lawfully admitted into the United States, is
a legal resident of this state, and has resided in this state for not less than the 6 months immediately preceding
the date of application. The concealed weapon licensing board may waive the 6-month residency requirement
for a temporary license under section 5a(8) if the concealed weapon licensing board determines there is
probable cause to believe the safety of the applicant or the safety of a member of the applicant's family is
endangered by the applicant's inability to immediately obtain a license to carry a concealed pistol. If the
applicant holds a valid concealed pistol license issued by another state at the time the applicant's residency in
this state is established, the concealed weapon licensing board may waive the 6-month waiting period and the
applicant may apply for a concealed pistol license at the time the applicant's residency in this state is
established. The concealed weapon licensing board shall immediately issue a temporary license to that
applicant. The temporary license shall be valid until the concealed weapon licensing board decides whether to
grant or deny the application.

It looks like you apply for a temporary permit once you become a resident and get a permanent one after 6 months. When you become a resident your Texas permit is no longer valid here. It doesn't say that any of the requirements for applying are waived so my thought would be that you would have to complete the course along with the other requirements for application for your permanent CPL.

I'll give you my experience. MI has a slightly different wording requirement on their training certificate so I took it (doesn't hurt to have classroom exposure on the "new" laws) and when I went to the County clerk to apply for a waiver I was told by the Ingham county gun board clerk that "they never issued waivers" and the reason for that was according to the Ingham county prosecutor my Ohio permit was good for 6 months, "see you then" just passed 6 months and submitted it slightly ahead and should hear back shortly. May be different in your county

Applying for Michigan Permit, with your TX CHL your good till you change your DL... Then you need to stop in PD for Pistol reg. forms..after that you can apply for your CPL/CCW but you will have to take CPL/CCW class, due to the fact TX laws are different that michigan laws.

You don't need to be a resident or have a permit to open carry. Here's a link to a helpfuf update about open carry and CPL holders. Permit holders can open carry in more places than non permit holders.
