Moving from MN to SD

I am moving from Minnesota to South Dakota. I was wondering if manly if I could change my Minnesota Resident concealed carry permit to a non resident concealed carry permit. If there is anything I should know about.

Any valid permit to carry a concealed pistol, issued to a nonresident of South Dakota, is valid in South Dakota according to the terms of its issuance in the state of its issue, but only to the extent that the terms of issuance comply with any appropriate South Dakota statute or promulgated rule. However, if the holder of such a nonresident permit to carry a concealed pistol becomes, at any time, a legal resident of South Dakota, the provisions of this section no longer apply.

You would be resident of South Dakota, so a non-resident Minnesota permit is useless to you while being in South Dakota. For travel, the enhanced South Dakota permit has more reciprocity across the nation. See handgunlaw.us.

The problem is it's $100 for the enhanced SD permit to carry class and another $100 to get the actual permit. I was wondering if I could change my MN resident conceal carry permit to a non-resident permit and then just get the $10 SD permit to carry. All I need is to be able to conceal carry in MN and SD.

Check with the issuing sheriff, but I don't see anything that distinguishes a resident from non-resident MN permit, other than where you live. Your MN permit ought to just continue on as before, till it expires. Renewal may be an issue, as it looks like you have to redo training with an acceptable entity.

Welcome to SD!

I agree, check with the issuing Sheriff.

Here is what it states on the SD Sec. of States Firearms website Concealed Pistol Permits: South Dakota Secretary of State, Shantel Krebs

the State of South Dakota recognizes any valid concealed pistol permit issued to a nonresident of South Dakota according to the terms of its issuance in the state of its issue.

Check my post #2 in this thread, citing the actual South Dakota law and commenting on it. The OP wouldn't be a nonresident of South Dakota, but a resident of South Dakota, therefore his Minnesota nonresident permit would not be valid in South Dakota. This exclusion of nonresident permits in your home state is common in a number of states.

In any case, the OP wants to carry in both states and tries to save some money by avoiding getting the single and more expensive Enhanced South Dakota Permit that would be valid in Minnesota as well. Instead, the OP is looking at the cheaper Standard South Dakota Permit for carrying in South Dakota and additionally the Nonresident Minnesota Permit for carrying in Minnesota.

Actual resident of SD here :thank_you2:

The SD permit costs $10, the application is literally half a page, your temp permit arrives in the mail within a week and you can carry immediately, your 'permanent' permit arrives within 2 weeks.

Don't play games, you will be a resident of SD and will need the SD permit.

Most of us just pay $75 for the Utah or Arizona permit.

Check with the issuing sheriff...

SD permits come directly from the Secretary of State Shantel Krebs, not any Sheriff's office. Your local sheriff has no say whether or not you get a carry permit.

In Minnesota, the Sheriff issues the carry permit, which is why the OP should check with the issuing Sheriff about the conversion of the existing resident Minnesota carry permit to a nonresident Minnesota carry permit. That was the question the OP asked in the fist place. The reasoning behind that question came later (in post #3).
