What will i need to do to transfer my ccw permit? Pain in the ass?

Notify the sheriff of the county you are moving too, I believe your out of state permit lasts for up to 6 months before you have to transfer it. I'm not sure if you have to pay the whole $80 of a first time application or just a renewal fee ($25) to get one from MT though. Don't quote me on this, but call your county sheriff for the actual details.

When I moved from Nevada to Utah I only had to do a change of address with each state. Was free in Utah and like $15 to Nevada.

There are a lot of pains in life. Changing your DL, changing your voting record, having your mail forwarded etc. When you do those other necessary things that come a move check into the MT regs regarding getting a concealed permit and just do what you have to do. Sorry life is such a pain.

You have to be a resident of Montana for 6 months before applying for the Montana permit. Colorado only issues permits to residents, so your Colorado permit may be invalid for the six months you are waiting as a Montana resident, not sure about that. Also, without a Montana permit, it would be illegal to carry a loaded gun openly or concealed within 1000 feet of school premises (Federal law). You can legally open carry outside the school zones without a permit in Montana.

Welcome to the world of "reasonable regulation" of the Second Amendment. Interesting how the politicians who pass such "reasonable regulation" would never tolerate such "reasonable regulation" of the First Amendment.

NavyLCDR is right but you can also Conceal Carry outside city limits without a permit. You only need a permit to carry inside city limits. With or without a permit you can never carry inside any govt buildings,Financial institutions, Places that serve alcohol to be consumed on premises or in any logging, mining or railroad camp. Call the county sheriff as soon as you move because most of them require an appointment and it can take several months to get a slot. Oh and you can keep loaded firearms anywhere inside your vehicles as long as they are not on your person.

dazedtraveler,

Why can't you open carry inside a vehicle in Montana on the person? This is the definition of concealed in Montana law:
45-8-315. Definition. "Concealed weapon" means any weapon mentioned in Link Removed through Link Removed and Link Removed through Link Removed that is wholly or partially covered by the clothing or wearing apparel of the person carrying or bearing the weapon, except that for purposes of Link Removed through Link Removed, concealed weapon means a handgun or a knife with a blade 4 or more inches in length that is wholly or partially covered by the clothing or wearing apparel of the person carrying or bearing the weapon.

I don't see anything in there specifying a firearm is concealed just because it is on the person's body inside a vehicle, so long as no clothing or wearing apparel is covering it.

It would only be an issue if you were pulled over and the LEO is in a bad mood or a jerk because of the word partially. if even a tiny bit of fabric from your shirt, coat or any clothing is covering even a tiny amount of the firearm it could be considered concealed. But in my experience most LEO's here are cool with it.
