Moving From AZ to IL

While living in Arizona (as a resident) my friend bought a handgun. He is now moving back to Illinois (driving) and we are both unsure as to what he needs to do once he gets his residency in Illinois. It is my assumption that since he will not have a FOID card until well after he gets residency in Illinois, he will have to store it at a family members house who has a FOID. Any other ideas?

Also, once he does have his FOID, how does he register the handgun in Illinois (if necessary)

Sorry if this sounds confusing. We just want to make sure we do this right.

Your friend can find out all the info he needs about the FOID at Link Removed
The State does not require registration of handguns, but he will want to check with the county/city/municipality he's moving to...the county I live in (Lake) doesn't require registration, but I don't know about others. He'll want to get his IL drivers license as soon as possible if he wants to expedite his FOID, as they use the picture on file with DMV for the card, even though you have to send the standard passport-size photo with the application. He'll also want to keep in mind that Illinois is the only state in the continental US without some form of CCW provision, neither do they honor other state's permits.

Man, it's too bad he has to move to the Peoples' Republic of Illinois. I lived there for a number of years. It's presently the most firearms restrictive state in the Union. It's the only state presently not issuing any kind of carry permit or recognizing any other state's permits. Hopefully, at some future date that will change as it did in Wisconsin recently. He'll have to live there a year before he can get a Firearms Owner Identification Card which he'll have to have before he can purchase a box of .22s or a box of rabbit hunting shotgun shells or any kind of firearm. It's registration, plain and simple, and a blatant violation of 2nd Amendment rights. But, maybe he'll be one more conservative gun owner voting to correct the situation. Good luck to him.

he will need a foid once he is a resident. Travel unloaded in a case. When I lived lived there. Well I still work there. You did not need to register per the state. I think that goes by city you are in. if its chicago he should prolly call cuz they are harsh from what I understand

Any chance we can just give Illinois to the Canadians? I realize this will probably piss them off, but it's worth it to us to cleanse the system of their influence!

Lived in Illinois 4 ever. Don't need a FOID 2 have in your house. Need a FOID after you change your drivers license to transport in the state. Can transport with old license unloaded in a closed case with the ammo in a different case. Need FOID 4 hunting, or buying. No registration of gun needed, Unless you go 2 Chicago. If you have a CCW & drive into state u stop unload & case gun separate from ammo. No loaded Magazines in the same case. Loaded magazine can be zipped into another case separate. Can't buy ammo without a FOID.

Don't live there anymore. Have Missouri CCW. Can't buy ammo or guns in illinois cause my FOID expired. Still have land there. If I get out of state hunting license I could still hunt there without a FOID cause im now a non resident.

Why would you move there. LOL. ;-)

He will have to get Illinois dl before he files for foid card in Illinois foid app takes approximately 30 after check is cashed. Everyone says you can not carry in Illinois but that is not exactly true I carry every day. I carry a copy of the legal case in my pack. And the loaded magazine does not have to be in separate container I keep them together in same compartment. Illinois vs mcdade

Thank you all for the advice. I live in Illinois now and wonder what he is thinking. I would give anything to be able to move out there. But... I can't. Again, I do appreciate the info. If you haven't noticed, I'm pretty new here, but this is the best site I have found. Very helpful and, for the most part, friendly.

There's no amount of money, for a job anyway, that should entice someone to move freakin Illinois. Tell your friend he should rethink his decision

I agree. I just got out here to help him load his stuff and I want to stay. We should just trade houses. The only benefit we have is that we both live within 10 minutes of Wisconsin

I am confused... Can you make up your mind? In your original message you said you are helping a friend; your #9 message said you now live in Illinois; your message above said you got there to help him...Am I reading English or some other language....???? Just curious what the truth is...

I have to be blunt here -- are you trolling? Hmm....I am done here.

If u read the posts you will realize that my friend lives in az and I live in illinois. I just flew out here to help him load his stuff and drive back. If that is confusing I apologize. The reason for my original question was to ensure we are doing things right. If that is trolling then I have the wrong idea about this particular population of gun owners. You all want people to be safe and be good representatives but you chasitiZe them for asking
questions. So make up your mind. Do you want a forum where people can ask questions and learn or one where people feel timid about posting because of what veteran members might say. I apologize that this post took the turn that it did and that what I said was misconstrued. Hopefully in the future my posts will be more clear. Now if you will excuse me, I'm going to crawl back under my bridge.
Yours truly,
The Illinois troll

:thank_you2:I was just confused...thanks for the enlightenment...I'm going back to my cave now to pick my own nose.:to_pick_ones_nose3: I shouldn't be here when I am tired.:girl_wacko:

Wonder what the ststus of the USA wide ccw reciprocity law is. Will Ill. be included?

That status is it's been passed to the Senate for a vote and if they pass it it then goes to Maobama for his signature. Don't hold your breath on this bill. Illinois will still be the giant gulag it has always been unless people demand change of laws and dare I say "leadership".

It will not be included. My suggestion is check with the city or town he will move to and they can answer. Personally, I would move to Wisconsin first if I had to move back to Illinois. I have family there and keep telling them to move out before any other rights and liberties are taken away. :sarcastic:
