No good parent teaches a child it's OK to point a gun (or BB gun) at anyone. That's a hell of a lesson she's teaching her kids. Despite many of us playing BB gun wars as kids, we weren't 6-years-old. A parent who leaves a mark on a child during discipline faces the same charges. This parent's behavior is absurd.Playing devil's advocate for a minute- The article just says a "bb-gun".
I wonder what type of bb gun it was?
I also wonder who called the police or an ambulance to report this?
A red "welt" sounds more like an "Airsoft" type gun may have been used. My kids have played Airsoft war games since they were about six years old. Yes, they have experienced red "welts". But, I never thought they needed medical attention.
If parents can be arrested for their kids being shot with an Airsoft type gun, we are really headed for trouble. Even if it was a Daisy bb gun, I don't see that facing 5 years is prison is warranted. (There must be more to the story than we're being told.)
We played bb gun war when I was growing up in the 60's & 70's and our bb's actually broke the skin and caused you to bleed. Back then NOBODY ever considered calling the police.
Heck, even today, if I called the police for somebody shooting my kid with an Airsoft or a Daisy bb gun, I'd probably become the laughing stock of the neighborhood.
This mom may be a moron. But, we sure seem to be turning into a nation of big wussies!

So you're teaching your kids to pop each other with airsoft? While instructors are teaching you never point anything at anyone? Even a toy? Okie Doke.I agree with you. But what really has me questioning the whole story is the child getting medical attention for a small "welt".
I would like to know more about who witnessed the event & who reported it to authorities.
When my kids first got into playing Airsoft one of the first things I did was go over safety rules & discuss safety gear. But, they also learned that an Airsoft pellet would hurt & leave a welt if it hit an unprotected part of the body.
How did they learn that?
By getting shot with an Airsoft gun on an unprotected part of their body.
I can see the stupidity of doing this with a more powerful copper bb gun. But, I also know that copper bb's will likely penetrate the skin and not just leave a "welt".
I guess it's the term "welt" and facing FIVE YEARS in prison for a "welt", that has me scratching my head a little bit.
I just think it's a bit scary that (if this sets a court precedence), you could face a prison sentence for playing "Airsoft" with your kids.

I feel like it's another nickel in the desensitization of our kids. Bombarded with violent video games, TV shows, lack of respect, religion, social skills and work ethics with a sense of entitlement. No accountability or punishment for their actions. They aren't like us when we were kids. I used to pump that baby up for maximum welts... I was a little punk. But I don't think kids today have the same base and value system we had. Funny part is the anti-gun parents who allow all of this and then wonder when the kid doesn't differentiate between the virtual world and reality. Hell they can't even communicate face-to-face anymore... give them a widget to talk to each other. Are you unaware that there are large businesses that have airsoft tactical courses laid out that whole families, including the youngins', pay good money to play "war games" in? Good grief, I got shot with so many BB's when I was a kid, it's a wonder I still have both eyes. I didn't miss it at the time because there was nothing comparable, but looking back, I'd have been a much more responsible BB shooter at age seven or eight when I got my first one if there were safety equipment and a place to go where rules were taught and enforced. But you can't enforce the 4 rules of basic gun safety and still play any kind of "war" games, whether it was cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers, or just playing "Army." I mean what're ya gonna do as a kid, point in a safe direction, yell "BANG!" and the kid behind you falls down and plays dead? What does that teach kids about the dangers of guns?
I got hit many times as a kid, and like tcox, had my skin broken and bled a little from time to time. Deal is, I can't point to a single scar on my body that came from a BB, but I have 10 or 12 very visible scars on my arms and legs, and one right above my eyebrow on my forehead, from pretty severe burns sustained when molten slag fell off the miles and miles of overhead welds I was doing at one job or another from around 30 years ago. Lighten up man. Life is a terminal disease. Might as well have some fun while you can.
