MMA/Cage fighting

I have been going to a crossfit gym the past couple years. While I train there, some of the MMA/Cage fighters train there as well. The gym owners invited my wife and I to an amateur cage fight the other night, and it really got me interested into joining the MMA gym as well. I would really like to see where I am in this world when it comes to unarmed fighting. It was a real eye opener to see the size of some of these guys, and even more surprising to see how some of the small guys took the huge guys down. Technique and power is not always visible, and a lot of these fighters you couldn't pick out of a crowd. The level of respect at these matches is amazing as well, unfortunately a there are still people that train at those gyms that never make it into the amateur/professional league, and have no respect for the people around them, and they walk among us.

I have a few questions that I would like opinions on:

1. If I were to start MMA/Cage fighting, will that effect in the eyes of the law/jury when I would be justified to use a firearm? (Ie: I am young, fit, and now professionally trained in hand to hand combat, do I have even more duty to fight without a firearm?)

2. Will joining a gym and sport, seen as a pretty violent sport, be seen negatively if I ever had to defend myself with a firearm? (ie: "This guy is a MMA/Cage fighter, he is violent, aggressive...he should never own a gun in the first place...etc")

For your first question...yes. Name a boxer that has been found innocent of any accusation.
And the second...yes. Refer to the attitude the public has towards boxing.

As a member of the armed forces, you are expected to step up and endanger yourself while off duty. Everybody thinks that you have to save them, even the cops. It will likely work the same for you regarding MMA, the DA will find out eventually. Their job is to convict you, not to do the right thing. Look at how they painted Trayvon Martin...it took almost 6 months for the truth to come out and even then they still showed a picture of him at 14...

Of course, the prosecutor is going to bring up anything he can find on you. That's what they do.

I have read where receiving firearm training will paint you as a gun nut just waiting to shoot someone. I would imagine the same thing would apply to MMA.

The prosecutors job is to make you look guilty and they will do everything they can (legally) to do that. Wearing a paracord bracelet will make you a survivalist wacko. Being a member of the NRA will make you a domestic terrorist. They will go through your life with a fine tooth comb and twist everything negative that they can find.

It's their job and it's our system. In my opinion, enjoy MMA. It's a great sport. Don't limit your life by what a prosecutor may say.

Thank you guys, Good points, I haven't limited my life so far. Wear that darn paracord bracelet, carry those nasty hollow point rounds, joining the areas militia as a medical instructor (hopefully), I don't think mma is going to hurt me anymore than that...

I have always said, if it's a good shoot it's a good shoot. Gotta remember to keep my mind sharp, not just the body.

What does wearing spongebob PJs make me? Or an adult onesie? Lol I got both...

Yeah, that NRA thing there pisses me right the **** off. I can't believe that congress would allow that. Our Governor is a member, as is former gov. Tommy Thompson. Calling them "domestic terrorists" is like Obama saying he isn't going to raise taxes on anyone...oh wait...he just said he will lmao

I am a member and proud of it!

I would keep that militia thing a little quieter if I was you...

I am an unarmed combat instructor. The self defense laws in my state are very pro-self defense. I do not believe my unarmed self defense training would be held against me in a shooting situation as long as my actions conformed to the law.

Re: "joining the areas militia" Probably best left unsaid in any public arena.

Why? They may not be very vocal but they are very active in public services. People may not know it's the militia picking up the trash or voluntarily helping with community activities, but they aren't hiding from the government either. I mean, they invite the sheriff's department out when they train all the time.

Maybe your view on what a militia is differs from what a militia actually is? I know mine was...

Chen, you already carry a gun. Does it really matter? What I mean is, if you get pulled over for DUI, does it really matter whether you got drunk on beer or spirits?
