I have my concealed license in North Dakota where I've lived the past 5 years. I'm seperating frm the military and will be moving back to Ohio. Do I need to get a new license in Ohio. I've looked into it and can not find much. I still carry a military id with me at all times of that matters. I've always been a resident of Ohio never claimed north Dakota as a residency.

Lawriter - ORC - 109.69 Reciprocity agreement.

(B)

(1) If, on or after the effective date of this amendment, a person who is a resident of this state has a valid concealed handgun license that was issued by another license-issuing state that has entered into a reciprocity agreement with the attorney general under division (A)(1) of this section or the attorney general determines that the eligibility requirements imposed by that license-issuing state for that license are substantially comparable to the eligibility requirements for a concealed handgun license issued under section 2923.125 of the Revised Code, the license issued by the other license-issuing state shall be recognized in this state, shall be accepted and valid in this state, and grants the person the same right to carry a concealed handgun in this state as a person who was issued a concealed handgun license under section 2923.125 of the Revised Code.

(2) If, on or after the effective date of this amendment, a person who is a resident of this state has a valid concealed handgun license that was issued by another license-issuing state that has not entered into a reciprocity agreement with the attorney general under division (A)(1) of this section, the license issued by the other license-issuing state shall be recognized in this state, shall be accepted and valid in this state, and grants the person the same right to carry a concealed handgun in this state as a person who was issued a concealed handgun license under section 2923.125 of the Revised Code for a period of six months after the person became a resident of this state. After that six-month period, if the person wishes to obtain a concealed handgun license, the person shall apply for a concealed handgun license pursuant to section 2923.125 of the Revised Code.

It would appear as if Ohio has a reciprocity agreement with North Dakota, but the Ohio AG website is down so can't confirm it.

According to Handgunlaw.us, North Dakota will cancel your license when you move out of the state, unless you have a license from your state of residence (Ohio). I haven't read through the ND statutes or administrative code to research the source, but recommend you do so.

See the "non-resident permits" section of this site and the links on the upper right-hand side of that page to access the statutes:

IMHO, you will need to get an Ohio license.

North Dakota Attorney General seems to agree:

If you are not a ND resident, attach a copy of your PCS (not TDY) orders showing that you are stationed in ND to the copy of your state driver’s license. If you later PCS out of North Dakota, your ND concealed weapon license will no longer be valid unless (a) you have since obtained a ND driver’s license; or (b) you have a valid concealed weapon license in your home state, which state has reciprocity with ND.

Military members are not exempt from the testing requirements.

I would seriously consider getting the Ohio CCW. Some states, e.g. Michigan will not recognize non-resident CCWs for other states. That is your permit must be from the state in which you reside; they would only recognize your Ohio permit, since would be a resident of Ohio. Any other permits, e.g. ND, Utah, Florida would be meaningless in Michigan and other states with similar laws or regulations.

If your ND license was valid after moving, Ohio would recognize it only for six months after you establish Ohio residency.

I don't believe this is accurate.

Ohio allows its residents to carry indefinitely on a license from another state with whom Ohio has a reciprocity agreement. The 6-month expiration only applies to states with whom Ohio does not have an agreement.

But as stated above, ND will invalidate the OP's license, so this possibility is moot with respect to the OP's situation.
