Thought this was interesting, and havent really heard a whole lot about the issue in a while...I just read the new law is being sent to the state Senate for final approval and is expected to pass. But, what extra training are they talking about, and how would LE know if you have the proper training or not? Its about time to allow CC in the previous No CC areas. Its stupid to allow OC, but ban CC, because we all know what law abiding citizens criminals are....

A State Senate committee on Thursday approved changes to Michigan’s concealed weapons law that include allowing people to carry concealed guns in churches, schools and sports arenas.

The legislation now goes to a vote in the full Senate.

Under the new law citizens would be allowed to carry their weapons into churches, schools and sports arenas — places they currently aren’t allowed to be packing heat. The proposal would also eliminate the state’s 83 county gun boards and transfer the power to issue CCW permits to local sheriff’s departments.

“Basically it’s a pretty huge rewrite of the concealed weapons permit law,” said WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick.

What I find stupid is I can clearly, Legally Openly Carry into these places, but cant carry concealed into these places...Lets hope this law passes.

Are bars really on that list? I don't think anyone should have the right to tell anyone where they can or cannot carry mind you, but I do think people should have common sense enough not to be armed while sitting at a bar drinking.

It is possible to be in a bar and not consume alcohol (there just to eat, designated driver, etc). I wouldn't be surprised if the law will restrict alcohol consumption while carrying, which I think would be a good idea.

Edit: I just realized the article was posted in March. I wonder these changes are still in the works.

That's like saying that people should have enough common sense not to be sitting at a bar drinking with car keys in their pocket because drinking and driving is so dangerous.

I was being eloquent. I should have just said I don't feel they should be allowed to carry in bars. Too many chances for confrontation. Be it as a designated driver dealing with another drunk or just going in to get a bite to eat.

What would make Michigan unique? In states where firearms are not prohibited by law in bars, or other drinking establishments, there is no "blood running in the streets". Washington prohibits carry in a bar that is restricted to over 21, but carrying under the influence of alcohol and carrying in restaurants that serve alcohol is not prohibited. We don't have any problems with drunks shooting people here.

A law that prohibits firearms in bars is like a law that prohibits carrying car keys in a bar. How about if we make criminal or criminally negligent BEHAVIOR illegal rather than prohibiting an object? 99% common sense and 1% statute keeps me from taking the car keys our of my pocket and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Why can't the same common sense and a similar DISCHARGING a firearm under the influence statute keep me from using a firearm under the influence of alcohol?

100's of times more people are killed every year by drunk drivers than by drunks with guns. So why are there no proposal to prohibit the possession of a vehicle or car keys in/at bars?

Agreed. I see the connection now. I guess I'm just scared to have faith people carrying in bars would be responsible. But if I feel that way, I should feel that way about people carrying guns in places they aren't prohibited which I don't. So.....I say let people carry in bars. I mean what's good for the goose. It's okay to carry at the park but not at the bar. We trust you enough to not think you're going to be drunk carrying a gun at the park but not enough to think you will get drunk sitting at a bar. It's just as easy if not easier (and cheaper) to get drunk outside a bar that it is within. Why is an airport like the holy grail of no weapons? I can see not being able to carry them on the plane, but why not in the terminal? Or at baggage claim when I'm picking up a member of my family or friend? It's so stupid.

You do live in a oppressive state! In Washington carrying at airports is not prohibited. I have open carried in SEATAC International Airport while picking up and dropping off my stepdaughter - no problems at all, even right in front of Tacoma police officers. Just illegal, by Federal law, to carry into or past the security checkpoint line. And, again, we have no mass shooting at airports in Washington. The fact is that prohibitions against the mere act of carrying a firearm really only affect law abiding citizens and have no affect on the criminals at all. But, it gives a warm and fuzzy feeling to some people to prohibit the object, rather than criminal actions.

These changes are still in the works, I found an update, cant remember how long ago it was, but it was basically the same article reposted for November. I understand its still in the State Senate ready to be signed....So, we should know for sure by the new year.

Bars...nor churches nor sports arenas...should NOT be prohibited locations by statute. They are private businesses and that decision should be up to the owner of each establishment.

Good to hear MI possibly loosening up. I go there frequently to visit relatives and MI has the longest list of prohibited places. Like movie theaters over x amount of seats...

Yeah it will be great but although I want carry in the church because I pastor one but I have heard that people are coming into the churches and shoot as many people as they can. Well just in the Atlanta Ga. area some guy came in the church and shot and I think kill someone in the church when they was praying. I think more of this is going to happen as the days goes on.

I had to correct my previous post...for an important word in my argument. "NOT"
