Metal shavings in new M&P 40c?

I shot about 200 rounds through my new M&P 40c and when I took it apart I noticed what seemed to be tiny tiny metal shavings. There was very little and the gun was carried for a day between me shooting it and me noticing this. Any ides?? Normal for a new gun? I've never heard of it being normal.

What kind of ammo were you using? Steel cased, brass cased, aluminum cased? Sometimes shavings from a round will make it into the gun and basically is dust. Keep up with the cleaning and examine your gun each time for any unusual wear. If there's a gunsmith nearby have them look at it for proper functioning.

Brass cased Wal-Mart Federal. I used it a lot in my Glock, maybe I just never noticed it. I guess I will just have to keep an eye on it after I go shoot again.

i have shot over 2k rounds of that ammo through my full size m&p 40 and didn't have a problem however i bought a m&p 40c to carry a few months ago and am using the same ammo in that one and am getting led deposits from it on the barrel. I don't know if this is what you're finding but i could be.

I'm not sure but i think they might have changed something in the specs of that ammo, i have a bunch of boxes of it and the boxes i bought a few weeks ago are now leaving led deposits on my full size too.

the deposits are not all that uncommon in the m&p compacts from what i've read.
best of luck

When I first get a new gun I always take it apart and clean it, then relube. What did your spent casings look like? Were they beat up or scratched up? What color were the metal shavings? I would give it a thorough cleaning and then relube and reshoot. If I kept seeing silvery colored shavings I would have it checked out.

I did clean and relube it before I shot it. The shavings appeared to be brass colored. I did not inspect the casings but when I was sweeping them up I did not notice any major damage to them. The gun shot fine, only one time the slide locked back before the last bullet which I think may be a break in thing as it only happened once. It was not the lead at the end of the barrel. They shavings were visible when I pulled the slide off. I am going to re clean it and re lube it and see how it goes after I shoot it again. If I could get pics I would take them but I don't think they would show up in a pic.

Well, if they are brass shavings, then I would be relieved. Most of my pistols, either the ones I own now or the ones from the past, did not grate any of the brass off, but a couple did. I did not worry too much about it and own the one to this day after about 3,000 rounds thru it, and all is still fine.

Is your recoil spring painted? I noticed yellow/gold flecks in my slide after my first trip t the range. It took me a few moments but I finally realized it was yellow paint flaking off the spring from compressing and recoiling.

You know what, I think it is that paint. Thanks for pointing that out. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I took a good close look at the barrel when I cleaned it and did notice some of what looked to be lead at the end of the barrel like in the picutres posted in the link above. I wonder if that is the ammo I used, though doubtful, or if it is a flaw in the gun?
