Mesa police: Man's gun goes off in Walmart bathroom stall

and began to sit down when his Ruger .357-caliber Western-style revolver fell out of its holster and fired a round

Idiot. I have never pulled my britches down without unholstering my carry. Stupid is as stupid does. My bud shot himself in the "buttocks" doing the same thing with a western style revolver. Big dummy.

Agreed............

While I recognize the media rarely gets it right when it comes to what a weapon actually is (pistol, revolver, rifle, etc.), I do think it is funny they state it was a western style revolver. The reason I bring this up is, I think, most "western" revolvers are single action. So if he just dropped it and it "went off" does that mean he was carrying with the hammer back. Something doesn't seem right here to me. Just my 2 cents.

I agree if the media got any of the info correct... All of my Ruger single action revolvers have a firing pin block.... So I don't think he dropped it. I think he cocked the hammer and pulled the trigger. Might look like a Colt SAA, but mechanically the Ruger is a extremely safe modern design. He's attempting to blame the gun while he's the unsafe element in this story.

My Ex worked with a guy that got killed when he dropped his ruck sack that had his pistol in it. It was a Ruger too, they won the law suit for unintended discharge. They were supose to do something to the gun to prevent this from happening. Guess they didn't or it was an old gun.

If it was a Western style revolver , single action, no transfer bar safety device, then the correct way to carry is with the hammer down on an empty chamber..if carried down over a live round it can fire if dropped on the hammer spur. If you do not know how to carry your weapon safely, then natural selection takes over. We can only hope that innocent bystanders do not get "selected" also.

So why would you have the hammer pulled back with gun in holster. duh. Is the guy just stupid or he didn't tell what actually he did to make the gun go off in that stall. Just dropping a revolver is not going to make the hammer go back in the ready to fire position
