Med Student Kills Intruder with Samurai Sword

BALTIMORE, Md. — Baltimore police say a Johns Hopkins University medical student armed with a samurai sword killed an intruder in his garage.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says campus police and an off-duty city officer responding to a call for a suspicious person heard screams to call police around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Guglielmi says the student told the man he found in his garage to leave and the man accosted him. That’s when Guglielmi says the student defended himself, cutting off the man’s hand and causing a severe laceration to his upper body.

He says the man died at the scene, but police are not yet releasing his name.

Police are interviewing the student and others and are talking to prosecutors about whether to file charges.

File charges?... For what? Cruel and unusual means of self defense? Failing to allow an intruder to inflict bodily harm or commit homicide? That should be the end of it. The intruder failed to leave and assaulted the victim in his dwelling… Sounds like a case of good old fashioned justice…

I agree. If that's the story then they have nothing to charge him with. If I didn't have a firearm to protect myself, anything I could get my hands on would suffice!

I wonder if he screamed "SAMURAI!!!" like John Belushi on that infamous SNL bit. That would have been awesome.:nhl_checking::thank_you2:

AP: Guglielmi did not know why the student kept a sword. He said he may have had some martial arts training, but was not an expert.

Rice's criminal history includes more than two dozen arrests for burglary, breaking and entering and auto theft. According to court records, he was charged in 2007 after he pulled a gun on a police officer, though prosecutors placed those charges on hold because the officer was on military leave.

Rice was convicted in 2008 of unauthorized removal of property and sentenced to 18 months. He was released Saturday from the Baltimore County Detention Center.

I'd carry one just for the hell of it!!! Sword on the left side and revolver on the right... "Go Ahead"..."Mess with me"

I can't say I have thought of carrying a samurai sword before, but I have often thought of a big-ass knife in a back sheath like Crocodile Dundee. But a samurai sword on one side and pistol on the other is an interesting picture...I guess I'd have to get real comfortable with open pistol carry first.

It figures.....

One scumbag is out on the streets terrorizing the populace because the one guy that could put him in jail for a while is busy honorably serving our country in perilous conditions.

It is a new world, indeed. :cray:

I saw this story and thought "way to go! Good for the student."
. . .next thing though, the sad point is that colleges instead of just being "gun free" zones will now become gun and sword free zones. You know we can't have all these little victems being able to defend themselves . . .

instead of a sign saying "gun free zone" in front of a college campus they need to put a sign that says "victems only beyond this point"

The article I read on this stated that the authorities were uncertain as to why the student had the sword. I'm no authority, but maybe it was to DEFEND HIMSELF AGAINST 46 YEAR OLD, REPEAT OFFENDERS, LURKING IN HIS GARAGE. That would be my guess.:sarcastic:

As soon as I read about this case, I knew that the "authorities" would try to find some way to hang this kid. Maryland is not a Castle Doctrine state; it is more of a "you must slink away with your tail between your legs" state. The first step of course is to get the media to portray the intruder sympathetically; the second is to focus on the horrible weapons the good guy owned.

"Oh, my goodness! Why did the student have the sword?"

Because he's an American and he chose to have it.

The perp had 29 burglary convictions, I think. If so, that means he committed probably 500 burglaries.

Good riddance.

If indeed all the facts are presented, then, it really shouldn't matter whether Maryland is a Castle Doctrine state, should it? He was accosted in his own home, and he acted appropriately in order to prevent injury to himself.

I hope not. But many factors are taken into account in cases like this. People whose natural allegiance is to poor, oppressed underdogs could claim that the garage is not the same as the living quarters of the house, and the kid should have run back into the house, locked the door, and called 911.

Don't get me wrong. I'd give the kid the key to the city, but there are politicians and lawyers and loudmouthed activists who simply can't stand the thought of somebody using a weapon to defend himself. Luckily, there doesn't seem to be a lot of political pressure to go after the kid.

SWORD...GUN...Whats the difference?

I'm just glad he did not use a boyonet. My God...they banned tose things on rifles for over ten years because of the threat they posed and how ominous they are.

News Media get a grip...they kid was clearly no match for the guy hand to hand (parden the pun)

29 convictions...I should hope that not only is he removed from society but that his dirtbag socially inept parents who failed miserably to produce a viable human being would be blocked from suing as well.

I find it interesting that some people are willing to avoid harming or possibly killing another person by means of self defense in the case of an attack. I just don’t understand how people could let someone injure them or kill them? It’s basic survival, primal instinct!! Regardless if I’m mortally injured in the fight, the assailant is going to need medical attention!! I’ll make sure he remembers the event if he survives it.:hang3:
Good for this student. Maybe if they don’t charge him with some ridiculous crime and he is allowed to finish his higher education, society could benefit from his existence, unlike the POS that continued to assault and burglarize other members of society. It sounds like many of the other classic cases regarding the systemic failures of this countries prison system to keep the truly dangerous and possibly deadly criminals from preying on the rest of the hard working, taxpaying, good intending members of society. I’m sure that those who defend criminals and believe they are worthy of their time would feel differently if they were violently accosted by them perhaps? Who can tell…:fie:
