WESTFIELD, Mass. – An 8-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision in western Massachusetts.

Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere says the boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club. Police say the force of the weapon made it "travel up and back" to the boy's head.

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died.

His name was not immediately released.

Law enforcement officials say although the incident appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden District Attorney's office are investigating.

Efforts to reach officials with the private club were not immediately successful.

This accident sounds like it was the result of limp-wristing. Regardless, it tragic to lose a child this way.

limp wristing?.....it was an 8 year old with an Uzi!!!!!!!!
this is the type of thing that gives the antis the fodder they need.....I can hear it now....."see these people have no business with guns":stop:

Nobody has any business letting an 8-year old fire an UZI!!! How about maybe just a BB gun or a .22 rifle to get the little guy started???

Especially a full auto UZI. With proper supervision an 8 year old could fire a semi auto UZI safely for a round or two. Heck I've seen people that can't fire full auto safely much less than an 8 year old!

Who was supervising the adults?

Unfortunately here in Mass antis will have a field day with this one. No child should be shooting a UZI. Sorry! Poor judgment on the instructors’ behalf. As a result, a child is dead.

Or anything fully automatic, for that matter.

They probably won't try the supervising adults for negligence, but they'll pass more laws against evil guns.

The boys dad was standing 10 feet away when it happened. He Is a Doctor and runs a ER in CT. He has a 11 year old brother who was also there at the shoot. I want to know why the RANGE guy was not holding on to the gun with the kid? On top of that get this. The whole gun shoot was set up and held by the Chief of police of that town.
