Marines asked to disarm...

It's ridiculous! I can recall being in Vietnam and not being allowed to carry a weapon and only one guard on the door of the BOQ. Why? We didn't want the enemy to think we were afraid of them. I KID YOU NOT!

I don't understand. USA armed forces?
USA unarmed forces? I hate asking such a dumb question but can this get any dumber? Announce it on the news a few more times so everyone knows the best time to kill Americans. I completely disagree with this. I don't care if the president is coming to speak to them, don't unarm armed forces. Might as well just rape them right?

Seems the present Administration has no respect for the military. Shocking, right?

Decision to disarm was made independently by the Area Commander, a Marine General, no input from administration or SECDEF. This is normal SOP in many areas. Before special gatherings and USO shows in Nam we had to turn in our weapons. Security for events was handled by perimeter security element. I am sure such an element was in place for this event. There was no movement here by CINC to disarm our troops so the enemy could kill them as seems to be suggested. BTW, I never felt insulted or degraded by being asked to disarm for an event , and this occured many times in my 30 year active duty USMC career. Just vote the guy out of office ( I will be trying to) and knock off the petty BS about some of the things that are happening. This was a normal operation. "Much ado about nothing"

I highly disagreed with the previous statement. I am currently in the Army as an infantryman. I would be highly pissed if one were to ask me to disarm on hostile ground. Its not only there lives they are risking but mine as well. WJH im not sure what your MOS was but any right minded infantryman would feel the same. I cant speak for pogs but for us grunts...our weapons belong in our hands.

Also wanted to point out... did any one else catch the error in that arcticle? M-16 and M-4 AUTOMATIC rifles.... cant they ever get it right????

This "pogue" was an airborne qualified (Naval Parachutist/ Ft Benning grad) Communicator. 3 Years with Marine Advisory Section of MACV, 1 tour with 1st ANGLICO (Air/Naval Gunfire Liaisson Company) Attached to Fifth ARVN and 1 tour with Forward Air Control team attached to 3rd Division. I went aviation after 11 years in jump status. After that I flew in helo and fix wing aircraft as Aircrew. You are not the only guy here who got sore feet. That said, my heart always goes with the "grunts".
