I just got out of the Marine Corps after 8 years. I am a certified Primary Marksmanship Instructor/Combat Marksmanship Instructor along with formal school instructor, do my certifications transfer in the civilian world. I would like to keep teaching but don't have the money right now to retake classes that I have been teaching for over 6 years now. What can I do? I am in the Allentown area in Pa. Any Help would be great. Thanks guys.

Check your state's requirements for instructor certification. Worst case would maybe involve getting NRA certified and that's cheap. You may be all set now...just check with the state and see.

From my research they don't. I was a pmi also and no one cared when I tried to get into teaching. You will have to take a lot of the nra instuctor classes. For anybody to give you any credit

I have friends who've taken the NRA instructors classes. They view it as an investment.

You will make a lot of friends if you adopt the civilian approach and go NRA. Yeah, it's time and money spent, but then, you can view it as an investment.

You're in a transition phase. Think of it as a new job. Students will appreciate your military background, but they're civilians, too, and don't have to be there. They can take classes from anyone, anywhere.

If you want to go cadre at some of the more specialized schools, then I don't know. They may look down on NRA, who is basically a monopoly. Obviously, there needs to be some standardized body. I don't know what other entity would provide certs. A quick search shows Appleseed and CMP.

Good luck and God speed!

Try job searching on the computer for the Federal Govt. Many jobs come up for instructors with Military background. Teaching Air Marshals is one that I can think of.
Good Luck and Semper Fi!

Kgober,
My name is Bob Harvey. Semper FI. I am a previous USMC PMI. I won a gun school in South FLorida. To teach civilians you have to have credentials, insurance and facilities. Different than the Corps. I am an NRA training Counselor.
Go to my website at SFLA GunSchool ? South Florida?s Premier Gun School. We are committed to excellence in the education of firearms training.. You can call me if you have any questions 1-561-715-7198. I have been commercially instructing for over 35 yrs. I can probably give you the trials and tribulations relating to this topic.

I know the feeling. I am from Northumberland PA. I am about to retire from the Navy with long back ground in teaching firearms. So let me know if you find anything good.
