Man Killed After Dog Urinates on Neighbor's Lawn

GET OFF MY LAWN
The victim's mother, Patricia Funches, told the Chicago Tribune that her son lost his life in a squabble about landscaping.

"It was all over a little wooden plaque," she said, referring to a sign honoring Clements' award-winning lawn. "It was a senseless death."

After Funches -- a father of two with a third child on the way -- allowed his dog Gucci to urinate on Clements' yard, the former Marine and retired truck driver exchanged nasty words with the victim.

Witnesses say Clements drew a handgun, and Funches told him: "Next time you pull out a pistol, why don't you use it?"

According to WBBM 780, Funches then started to walk back toward his home, but Clements approached him from behind and shot him once in the abdomen.

When police arrived on the scene, they reportedly found the victim bleeding on the ground in front of a vacant home down the block from Clements' home, and witnesses directed the officers to the suspect's house -- where Clements was waiting in his garage with the door open.

"I knew you were coming for me," he told police, according to Will County Assistant State's Attorney Sondra Denmark. "That's why I changed my clothes. I knew you were coming for me."

Investigators recovered a .45-caliber handgun from the home that they believe Clements used in the killing. Clements faces first- and second-degree murder charges, and is being held on $3 million bail.

Neighbors said they knew Clements was protective of his grass -- he actually has a sign on his mailbox warning the mailman to keep off his lawn.

But they never thought his passion for landscaping would turn violent.

"I was thinking that was so petty," Kwesi Sallis, a friend of the victim, told WBBM. "You're a grown man. He's a young man, you know what I'm saying? It's just some grass, you know? You can grow the grass back."

I live on a corner lot and our bushes by the sidewalk serve as the "meeting spot" for every freakin' hound in the neighborhood. Grass looks like sh#t and it infuriates the hell out of me when people stop and let Fido pee away, all the while LOOKING AT ME STANDING IN THE DRIVEWAY WATCHING THEM! Occasionally, I"ll put the "stink eye" on them real hard, and it's kinda comical to watch 'em trying to drag Fido along while the poor mutt is still trying to take a leak. :to_pick_ones_nose:

But, geez, shoot somebody for it? Seems a mite extreme to me. He shoulda just shot Fido, if he was determined to let the lead fly. Fool.

He'd probably get a longer sentence for shooting Fido!

I'm thinking it's not a good idea when someone pulls a gun on you to tell them to use it. But hey he'll have more time and a huge "Yard" to landscape now.

The leaking thing is OK with me. The dumping thing I tend to be a bit less forgiving. With kids playing in the yard it tends to find it's way into the house by shoe bottom.

I have 1 neighbor with a dog currently. There were 2 until one dog died (old age).

Archie was very concerned about his dog crapping on other peoples lawns. His dog could be in mid dump and if he saw it, before the turd was close to being on the ground he would be on his way over to remove it. His dog was a Basset hound by the way so that's pretty fast. He would walk the dog and always had a bag and a old styrofoam coffee cup for a scoop just in case.

Rich however was less attentive to such matters and very often I would look and see his dog cross the street to use my yard for an outhouse. I would go and get the shovel, pick up the offending turd, and catapult it across the street to his yard. Other neighbors mentioned the issue to him and he apparently missed the point. So someone decided to leave a bag full of puppy poo in the back of his truck one fine day. He asked folks and perhaps had his suspicions about the perpetrator, never actually finding the person responsible.
I was asked point blank if it was me. I said quite simply "I would not have wasted a good bag". I think that ruled me out as a person of interest.

Shoot the guy... Uh, No... That kinda says "underlying mental health issues"...

just my 2 pennies...

Peace...

The funniest (to me, not the neighbor) doggie "dump" my wife and I witnessed from the kitchen window once was when a neighbor's lab took a healthy poop on anther neighbor's FRONT PORCH one morning before work. I'm saying "Oh, man, how'd you like to take one step out the door on your way to work and step right into a steaming pile"? My wife was apalled. I mighta shot that neighbor had that occurred to me.

That is where the paint ball gun comes in handy...:sarcastic: for the dog and the owner...

Heck, you'd still probably be charged with some type of felonious criminal assault and a civil suit would be in the works. Might as well use lead and make it worth your while.

Hey, 6SC, you need to instruct the neighbor with the coffee cup and bag on the finer points of picking up after your pooch. The people I see walking their dogs put a sandwhich bag over their hand and then if Fifi poops, why you just grab it with the "bag hand" and then turn it inside out. Voila! Poop in bag. Seems to work well from what I've seen altho it ain't for me...walking home with a bag of warm dog poo...then again, maybe that's where all those crap-filled baggies on my front porch are coming from!

And if it's like a Rott or something, you're gonna need a grocery bag on your hand!

Unfortunate confluence of events. Psychotic lawn-obsessed man meets inconsiderate pet owner. I guess if he was going to take somebody out sooner or later at least it wasn't wasted on a room full of schoolkids or some such trajedy.

Well... Archie's dog is the one that died of old age. It figures... The one that craps on my lawn is still around:mad: Although he is getting old and does not come over very often now.

We live in a pretty private area with one road in and out of the circle. We get people that walk dogs coming through once in a while. I did yell out the window at someone I knew did not live close by last year. I yelled "And that will be going with you". They looked and gave me the yes nod holding up a bag.

It's just good manners the way I see it. Leaving it there to be stepped in or hit with the mower is wrong.

Speaking of puppy poo, How is the little guy doing?

Peace...

The little guy is cool, real cool. Got this attitude that nothing fazes him, he can handle whatever needs to be handled. I like that. He's 15 weeks old, have had him 2 weeks and he's starting to sit on command, come on command, retrieves the dummy and some old wings; I've fired my .45 around him and he's not gunshy. And he puts his nose to the grass when we walk the fields.

His only downside to date is he's a little thug. Torments the crapola out of the old Lab, whose too good natured to bust him. He did try the same act with my son's Brittaney who put the smack on him right quick. Didn't do any long term damage, that's for sure, cause he was right back at it before too long.

So, I have high hopes for him. It's a good distraction right now, too and keeps me on my toes, gotta train with him at least twice per day. Gotta like doing it (which I do).

I had this vision of a puppy running up, grabbing me by the legbone and dragging me off to JJ's yard!

Yea sounds like a puppy... I saw the pictures and laughed. Hummm, wiskers kinda look the same:sarcastic:

Some day when I have the time to be around more I'll get one. I had a Lab growing up and miss a dog. She was not good with the guns however. I took her with me once to the range and fired the 12GA while she was at my side. She was under the truck for the rest of the skeet round. She would get under a table and shake. I would know a thunder storm was on the way...

Not a good time now being home less. I told the wife and kids that it's not fair to them if they don't get the needed attention and time with us. Right now that would be the case.

Peace...
