Man, I HATE Moving, But..... // (Kinda Pic-Heavy for Phones)

.....I LOVE where we moved to!

We got so far out in the sticks that you can't find the address on Google Maps without tricking it by entering the wrong street name. And while it's a double edged sword, our house just barely gets cell service out here. That's not because there aren't towers in the area, but because we're down in a creek-bed holler with ~100' or so hills all around us blocking them thar cell waves, plus we have a tin roof that doesn't help at all either. We had to go from ~34 mbps cable to only 6 mbps DSL when we had planned on using a dedicated data hotspot from our cell provider. As you can see by my new Location entry, our new cell situation kinda named our humble hideaway for us - "The Republic of Dead Cell Holler." Oh well, I don't do a lot of downloading or uploading anyway, so this is fine for just reading fora and getting email etc.

Anyway, just a member/human interest post here. Some pics for those who are interested. Not giving away the exact location for now, but in the Dothan, AL area generally-speaking.

'Bout half a mile in off the paved highway, you crest a hill and can see our mailbox just before the dirt road takes a curve to the left:

Look to the right about where I was standing when I took the above pic, and you can see the corner of our house and the unfinished pump-house. Yep, we be on well-water out'chere. Not positive, but I don't think the county water utility even comes out this far. Now all we gots to do is go full-on solar, and we'll be off the grid completely.....well.....except for this confounded interwebs thingy.....
RDCH002.jpg

The house is close to the road, but there's only one more address past ours and the road dead-ends at their driveway, so it ain't like traffic is a problem. Nice stand of small(ish) trees give us plenty of privacy anyway...
RDCH003.jpg

Went past the driveway to take this pic. I'm purposely avoiding taking shots of the front porch for now because there's a bunch of crap on it from the move, but it runs about 3/4 the width of the front of the house, and I'd estimate is about 8' to 10' deep....
RDCH004.jpg

Cross the driveway threshold and this is what you see. The window above the garage is a loft-like "bonus room" which GW (my Gorgeous Wife) is using as I type this for her work-from-home office. In the far background to the left you can see parts of the two outbuildings....
RDCH005.jpg

Standing close to the drive up to the garage looking down towards the outbuildings, the property extends down to the creek about 1,200 or so yards back....
RDCH006.jpg

The previous owners (and builders BTW) called the front outbuilding the "game room" because the husband held card games out there several times a month. I told him we were thinking about trying to find a band who needed some rehearsal space to rent it, and he said heck, if it's for rent, I'll take it and just keep my games goin' out here! So we shook hands and now our new (and higher) mortgage is offset by a couple hundred bucks a month. We and the old owners hit it off nicely after we got the real estate agents off our backs. The other building is a tool-shed/reloading shop/work-shop/whatever. Sellers needed a little extra time to clear out, so the trailer and misc. jungle-jive is all theirs. No hurry, they can get a little at a time every time they hold another game I reckon....

RDCH008.jpg

This is a little to the left of the shed and in back of it, looking down the leaf-covered trail that goes relatively unobstructed all the way down to the creek. It gets a little bit muddy down there, and it's been raining a lot the last couple of days, so I'll have to add pics of the creek later after the woods dry up a little, but it's freakin' beautiful all through the woods and down by the creek. Couple of other shots to the right showing the woods behind the shed and game-room following....

Continued in next post.....

.....Continued.....

Oh yeah, the game-room has (sort of) an outhouse. It's actually plumbed, so it's not really an outhouse, but you do have to go out one of the doors and walk around the side of the building to use it. Just a commode and a sink in there, no more or less than ya need to play cards from dusk till dawn. HA!
RDCH014.jpg

So this is standing basically right in front of the outhouse looking back up towards the house. The driveway we started out coming down is on the right and the big white void you can see on the other side of the trees is the house...
RDCH015.jpg

And on the other side of the game-room looking up the driveway towards the dirt road....
RDCH016.jpg

The back of the house, garage and deck just past the stand of trees between here and the game-room/shed....
RDCH017.jpg

HUGE deck built into kind of a courtyard between the two wings of the house. The short wing on the left is looking into the master bath, and the master bedroom/master closet/linen closet/toilet closet are all either in there or just beyond. Each wing has a door out to the deck, including the big French doors to the living room/kitchen/dining room areas in the middle....
RDCH018.jpg

Back side of garage, oblique angle to the master bath and window above garage to GW's office. If you can't tell, the deck was built around an above-ground pool. The pump is still there, but the pool's been gone for years. Previous owners got tired of cleaning leaves out of it multiple times a day. I thanked them profusely for taking it out! .....
RDCH019.jpg

This is looking down approximately where I was standing when I took the last pic....
RDCH020.jpg

And then looking back towards the game-room from the deck....
RDCH021.jpg

And the courtyard......

The house needs a good power-washing. A few little repairs here and there are needed, but all-in-all, this is our little slice of Heaven on Earth. I can shoot anytime I want to. I can canoe and/or kayak on my own creek and build a deer-stand overlooking its shores (there's about 200' of the creek that falls within my property line on both sides. The rest is split more or less down the middle by my line). Maybe another $20K will get us completely self-sufficient (off the grid) if we're willing to give up the land-line and internet, which who knows? We may well do before all is said and done.

Hope y'all enjoyed the tour. If not, who the fvck cares? LOL I'm gonna go now to finish setting up my stereo, turn it up to 11, and see which side of the house gets the best reverb off the surrounding hills! HA! Later......

One thing I see missing, you need a two wheel Gravely to do some work with the Cub Cadet. Link Removed

Is there a basement or is it just crawl space under parts of the home?

Looks are a bit deceiving. It's actually a slab-built home, but the foundation walls do give the appearance that there's possibly a basement under some of it. That's mostly the deck that's raised, and the garage/bonus room are built on a slab that's about half a story lower than the rest of the house. There's no crawl space anywhere below the house itself, but as much as 4' to 5' under the deck, and a couple or three feet under the left side of the front porch. The foundation walls you can see simply follow the slope down to the garage pad on the left side, and/or down to the back yard on the right side.

I envy you. I thought MY house was in the sticks. How much acreage do you have?

Just a couple of 100ths under 5 acres -BUT- there are 40 acres in a deeded trust (I don't recall the actual technical name for that arrangement) from the property line to the left of the driveway facing the house that goes over to the property line of the only neighbor further on up the road from us (at the dead end that I mentioned), and that goes WAY past the creek in an "L" shaped layout that borders the entire back side of my property and back to the right towards the paved road that we access our dirt road from. It may go all the way over there, I'm not sure, but in any case, the woman who owns it put it in a trust to be kept in the family for some amount of time that I don't know, but she's only 55, so I don't guess it's going to be developed before this 60-year-old meets his Maker. GW may have to deal with more neighbors comin' in, but I kinda doubt it. There's not any developments to speak of for several miles towards town. The Google Maps pic below shows somewhere between 400 and 600 acres by my estimation, and it's 8 miles from the end of our road (house/approximate property marked by yellow oval) to the main highway, and I've yet to see any sub-divisions out here on this side of that highway. I think you can probably count the addresses in this pic on two, maybe three hands, and it's only more sparsely-populated in all directions except West towards the highway....

I don't know who owns that trailer, but that is one hell of a big ammo can!

Everything looks good. I love the surrounding woods here, but there are neighbors on the other side of every hollow. You can't see the houses unless the leaves have fallen.

I love the sound of the wind roaring through the trees, and my wife's wind chimes making noise, happening right now.

It always makes me happy to hear of someone finding, and acquiring, their dream home. Enjoy every minute of it Blues!

Sweet.........glad you both found THE place you wanted. Got family in Somerville, AL. Very quiet and peaceful and very armed. Congrats and glad to hear you're doing better.

Still haven't made it back out to the creek to take some more pics, but the former owner of our property did give us the opportunity to get a bird's eye view of the area. He is a private pilot and has a 1955 (same year I was made - HA!) Beechcraft Bonanza F35 that he took us up in. GW got a little air-sick from the flight, but we both still had a blast. We were up for about an hour or so, but I only managed to record 13 or 14 minutes worth. This first one is titled, "Flying On the Chattahoochee River." It will be obvious why shortly....

Another clip to follow in the next post....

This one's called, "Headland (0J6) Fly-by and Landing," which will also become obvious why, but there's about 10 minutes or so of just basic scenery and cabin chatter first. Enjoy the flight!
