A 67-year-old Southport man was jailed Wednesday after he allegedly held six children at gunpoint when they used his driveway to turn their off-road vehicle around.

Jerry Lee Fulcher was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and six counts each of aggravated assault and false imprisonment, according to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. He was being held in the Bay County Jail without bond pending a first appearance in court Friday.

According the BCSO incident report:

The six children, who are between the ages of 4 and 16, told investigators they were riding an ATV and turned into Fulcher’s driveway at 4036 Deer Point Road to turn around at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. They believed the property was vacant, but a man, later identified as Fulcher, came out of the house pointing a handgun at them.

@aich: at face value yes mentally deranged people should not have guns HOWEVER. who decides when they are mentally disturbed? What constitutes the line when someone is mentally disturbed enough to be denied a firearm? How does this process get started and is it reversible if they meet certain criteria? What would those criteria be? Felons aren't allowed guns ytet they have them anyway. Maybe this guy was already supposed to not have firearms due to mental illness or arrest history? Remember laws and regulations are a two way street. they may protect us sometimes but other times they simply hinder law abiding people and significantly infringe on the rights of the populace.
These situations do not always have easy solutions is my simple rambling point.

I certainly wouldn't want local, state, or federal government making that kind of decision about you or me. They show up on their own, just like this guy did. At that point, a jury of his peers can decide.
