Making stuff up online.

There are a couple of folks that I encountered that have posted some pretty far fetched info on this site. Not wanting to sart a "flame war" or be rude in any way, I thought of different ways of "calling BS". Any members have any ideas?

I have no objection to certain types of "BS" as they are protected under 1A. What I am concerned about is that some of the tactics suggested by these folks may be take seriously by folks who are not as knowledgeable as some of us "seasoned" members. Many of these suggestions are outright dangerous and may result in serious injury death, and possible criminal prosecution.

Your opinions will be appreciated.

I think that the best way to "call" people on their BS is to PM them; I don't think this should be done publicly so that everyone else can see.

agree and disagree.........if a comment has been made or information given in a public room, that means plenty of people have seenit. it would be a disservice not to call it out in the same room and clarify though it may be uncomfortable for the person that posted it....also it can give that person an opportunity to defend what theyve posted or admit otherwise.......unless its me then PM me ..:girl_wacko: j/k

If something is dangerous call BS

If I or anyone else posts something that is dangerous Call BS immediately
The Goal is to have the same number of eyes, fingers and toes at the end of the day.

Anything that contains 'it is a well established fact ...,' 'it's common knowledge that ...,' or 'it is widely accepted ...,' needs to be called for cites.

Requesting/providing a Cite in the forum for 'blatant' statements helps us all.

So when someone says ... "It's common knowledge that more guns = more crime. [or similar]" a request for citation should be the next post in the thread.

It is a well established fact that 42.21% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Unfortunately I have this overwhelming habit of getting to the correct truth, kind of the Fox Mulder in me. Perhaps Luke could arrange a rating system or BS meter for posts?

I agree, however this works both ways, meaning we must require citations and verification whether the alleged "common knowledge" benefits our side or not.

Agreed - and you have just hit on a key issue in the difference between 'their' side and 'our' side.

On 'our side' the truth matters, regardless.

"If the facts don't support their opinion, then they just use different facts."

There is no need for a BS meter as some people would use it even if it's true. We are all Adults and should act as such. Just Pm the member/members and talk with them like that. We have no need for a he said she said fight on the forums. Point in case ( the topic about posting to much) We all had fun with that but we took it way to fair and Some members got a little mad and it lead to the topic being locked By Luke. Just deal with it as a Adult and talk to the person.

Making Stuff Up

The whole idea of calling BS reminds of the signature of a friend of mine in another forum. the person who said 'our side' and 'their side' hit the nail on the head. substitute your variety of BS for the two terms in this.

Pornography is what you like, while erotica is what I like, you dirty-minded pervert!

I think the topic was locked because it took up unnecessary space, and allowed some group members to "pad" their post count. I doubt that it had anything to do with hurt feelings.

If the apparent BS could be a safety hazard, point it out openly, in the forum. If it is not a safety issue, send a PM and seek clarification/reasoning/citation of a source.

That's exactly the point I made in my earlier post. BS needs to be dealt with privately, not out in the open where everyone can see.

money talks BS walks.Obama the most expensive president ever. We will regret him.:suicide2:

That's not the topic of this post. Not trying to play the role of moderator or anything, but you should only post stuff that relates to the topic at hand, and what you said here has nothing to do with said topic.
