Making a 38 Super on a 1911 Frame

Hi all,
I am thinking about making a 38 super on a 1911 frame. I was thinking just like the super carry ultra that kimber makes. Anyone have any suggestions or advise?

9mm and .38 Super have close enough rim thicknesses and diameters that they can share the same breech face. A '9mm' slide will work just fine.

I like BARSTO barrels. That's what I used when I converted my first 9mm 1911 to .38 Super.

As for why he's building on in .38 Super, have you tried to locate a .38 Super 1911 recently?

It's never been a real popular caliber and the .40 S&W has overtaken it in the ISPC circles that kept it alive through the '80's. That being said, it can do anything a 9x19mm can do - only faster or with a heavier bullet , at a lower pressure and more accurately. It also seems to shoot 'softer' recoil wise to me.

get a Rock

Rock Island Armory make a 1911 in .38 super. You can get one already setup and then customize as needed.

Maybe he's got a frame and wants to build something different. It happens every once in a while if you like to horse trade.

I got a stainless Essex 1911 frame in trade one time back in the early '90's (I traded off an AR-15 to a guy and it was part of the deal) and did another trade with a retired AMU gunsmith that lived nearby- I gave him a US Switch and Signal 1911 slide- in exchange for him building me an accurized 1911 on the Essex frame for shooting bowling pin matches. He supplied the top end, sights, parts and about 30 years experience of shooting and building match guns for the Army Marksmanship Unit. What I got was a AMT Hardballer (an early one, not the later junk) slide with Bo-Mar target sights on an Essex frame that could shoot a cloverleaf shaped 5 shot group at 25 yards if the shooter could do their part.
