The Medford Mail Tribune is suing the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

The newspaper wants a list of concealed weapon permits in Jackson County. Sheriff Mike Winters says that is not public information, but the Jackson County Web site says, under Oregon law, an application for a concealed weapon's permit is considered public information.

Mail Tribune editor Bob Hunter says they want the information for research about how far-reaching a ruling on the Shirley Katz lawsuit could be.

Katz is the Medford schoolteacher suing the Medford School District.

She wants to be allowed to carry a concealed weapon on school property.

A judge heard that case last week and is expected to post his decision on the county website, the judge did not say when that will happen.
