i am planning to use my tax refunds (sorry if i'm reminding you all about tax season already ) to purchase my first ar style rifle. should i go with the smith & wesson m&p15-22 or the mossberg 715? i can get them from my dealer for roughly the same price. opinions are welcome.:crazy_pilot:

First off, if you're paying the same amount for a Mossberg and a S&W, you're getting ripped.
The S&W is the closest 22 I've handled to an AR 15. It LOOKS like one, it comes apart like one,
& it functions like one.
The S&W is very well made, whereas the Mossberg feels light & cheap.
I have had the S&W for a couple years now. Have put thousands of rounds throught it. It doesn't
like cheap ammo. Runs flawlessly on CCI's.
My OP is biased because I own one. So get somewhere that has both . Get them in your hands
& decide which one feel best for you.

I have a better idea buy a real AR, and then a 10-22 ruger for a semi auto 22, the ruger just about runs any ammo and even a good 22 AR is fussy at best

Missoak is right about the price. The Mossberg should over $100 less than the S&W. As a gunsmith who has worked on these the S&W is a little better. Almost anything for an AR, except trigger/hammer pins (they need to be longer for the S&W), fit the S&W.

No question, the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 is the way to go. I don't have one yet, but it will be my next purchase. It is the closest you can get to an AR 15 in .22lr. It is also a very reliable, considering the .22lr caliber. Now, getting the right .22lr ammo at a reasonable price may be a problem.

Yep, ammo is the big issue right now. Not unusual for me to run 1K through this thing .
My grandson loves it. He shoots it like a machine gun. So much fun.

I bought the mossberg for my son a couple x-mas' ago. Its been fine, but I paid almost half what the S&W was. If these two rifles are the same price, somethings wrong somewhere. That said, if theres nothing wrong with the S&W... get it.

+1

This is exactly what I did but backwards... Got a ruger 10/22 put a Nordic AR kit on it and love it! There's a ton of ruger accessories made for it and it eats everything I throw at it and is a tack driver. But be warned... Once I did that, the AR bug bit me hard and have built two of them in the last year. And the knowledge gain replacing the stock on the Ruger will make it a lot of fun too!
