I'm afraid that is normal for all new Smith & Wesson guns. After the M&P Pro came out, I couldn't find 17 round magazines anywhere for about 4 months. The same thing happened with the M&P .22. I had magazines on back order for 2 months and had to change from 12 to 10 rounders to get two of them shipped last week. It will probably be 2 to 3 months before extra Shield magazines are available in any quantity. By the way it also happens with long established models. I ordered 2 ten round magazines for my Model 41 Target Pistol and despite showing in stock on S&W's web page, they were back ordered. I immediately contacted Brownells and they had 2 twelve rounders in the mail to me that afternoon. Such is the nature of these things.

I think you meant to write "no gun stores carry the M&P Shield" because they can't get any from S&W! Oh and they can't get an extra mag or two too either.

It's a very common thing that happens with all new releases. Sometimes they announce guns in the magazines, and you won't see one until a year later. They promote, let the gun writers test, and the company tests the waters. They release the gun, and it takes a while for them to catch up on making the mags and accessories. It's normal, and one reason I don't order any new gun right off the bat. I give it another year or so before i even attempt to get something brand new. Order the mags in advance if possible and you may recieve them in a reasonable time. I remember the Beretta Compact Storm pistol. I was working for a dealer and It was two years after I saw them promoted in the mags, before I actually got my hands on one. After I got it, it took another 6 months to get spare mags for it.

There is a small removable plug/spacer in the 10 rounder that when removed makes it a 12 rounder. There is a video on youtube.
