Lost Key

I have a small gun case in my car,its the kind with the cable that you secure around a seat mounting point. Any way.......I've locked one of my guns in it and have misplaced my keys here at home.:fie: How does one go about getting opening this safe without the key? I'll have to remove the seat to get the safe out,and I'd rather not torch the lock and take the chance of melting my gun. I don't remember where I bought the safe,there is no name or serial numbers visible from the outside.

Retirednak, the cable is no problem either bolt cutters or a visit to your local mechanic. Most mechanics have a high speed cutoff tool which will whizz right thru it-will cut the safe open as well. Throw the guy a $20 for lunch/beer and I'm sure he or she would be happy to help.

If your is like mine then I would contact the manufacturer and give them the number located on the lock. They will mail you a key that will work for a small fee. If you don't want to salvage the safe then cut it off as mentioned above. If your luck is like mine you will find the key when you get back home from the locksmith. :biggrin:

Thanks for the replies fellas,
I don't mind pulling the seat to get the safe loose,half hour job. I thought about a locksmith,put prices are higher then a cats back. Last key made was almost $8! Since I can't find any numbers on the outside of the lock,I'll be forced to see a locksmith. I thought about using a drill press,but I really don't want to tear up the safe in case its a hardened lock.

if its a high quality safe the lock will usually have a high strength steel plate over the lock to prevent drilling... but doesnt mean it cant be done with a good bit and a drill press... just drill slowly... and as said the cable can come off with bolt cutters if you wanted...

i'm guessing its one where the lock is in a spot not over the gun... a hammer and a point chisel (cant think of the right name off the top of my head right now lol) will get you started...

If you don't want to salvage the case take a Dremel or similar tool and cut the case around the lock (assuming there's no part of the gun under there).

Here's a tip a local locksmith gave me - get an extra key made and lock it in there. That way if this happens again, you can have him open the case, give him the key and he can make a replacement. Otherwise he would have to re-key the lock which is much more expensive. Of course this was regarding the consol lock on a truck, not a (presumably much less expensive) locking case.

I can make fun of this because I am probably the most capable person I know to do just this. i always get paranoid when i have to put mine in the car lock box. Only because I know me better than anyone. I believe the OP and I are related down the line.

I'm hoping the lock isn't hardened and I kinda doubt it since I only paid $100 or so for the safe. I'm gonna yank the seat rather then cut the cable. If I ruin the safe itself,I'll still have a nice hardened cable with loops on both ends. The lock itself is on the end of the safe so no damage to the gun can accure by drilling.(I hope)
My car sat in the garage half torn apart for almost a year while I worked on it. I had a blond moment when I took the keys out and put them in a safe spot so I could have them handy when needed.

2 drill bits later and its open. I went to put the gun in the safe and noticed a lone key in the corner where my ammo is,its the friggin spare key:shout:
Just my luck,good news is I can replace the lock and all will be good.
