+1 on the XD's--I have the 9mm sub comp and the 45 comp. Both are rugged and reliable.
Another you may want to check out is the CZ P01. It is 9mm with a decocker.
I like all my guns but the P01 is my favorite carry gun and it is probably the best gun I have ever shot--and really accurate and fits my hands perfectly plus I really like the SA/DA thing
