Looking for a compact CCW w/ suppressor

Hello all,
Little about me... I joined JROTC at 14, ROTC at 18 and am currently out taking college classes. I was a range instructor for JROTC for about six months. I'm also an expert marksman with the medal to prove it. I'm about to turn 21 and am enthusiastic about getting a ccw. There have been a lot of active shooters recently and I want to do my part to protect my community and myself.

I'm looking for a compact .40 s&w or 9mm that doesn't have a problem taking a suppressor. I'm familiar with the long wait time for approval but it would be worth it in my opinion...

CC with a suppressor? I would keep the suppressor detached or secure it in my laptop case while carrying the gun concealed on my person. Thoughts?

I'm thinking hk usp compact .40 with a gemtec, but I want to hear your opinions.

I need something that people won't notice, I wouldn't want my classmates to know I CC because of the stigma at my liberal school...

I've already talked to the police and they said I can legally carry on campus, probably should throw that in there.

Some of the SIG compacts have threaded barrels as an option. 9mm threaded barrels are available for the P239 and the P250-C for example.

It adds a small amount of length to the barrel (maybe a centimeter) but not much that you notice when the silencer is not installed. The Sig silencer for the 9mm adds 7".

For a suppressed CCW you might just wait another year or so for it to be more practical. I bet this makes it to the market in the near future and silencer design has got to change as they are now legal in so many states. Still a little bulky to carry, but if you are able to carry a full size gun, it might be an option.

Why on earth would you want a suppressor concealed on your CCW. I realize you are very young but the James Bond fantasies need to stop.

He said he wasn't going to mount the suppressor while carrying. I think he's trying to have one gun that he can use both for carrying and shooting with the suppressor. The truth of the matter is that the suppressor along with the federal tax is going to be probably something like three times what your carry piece is. The price of the host gun is often down in the noise on these things.

Seriously, don't buy a suppressor yet. Use the money on some training instead first. A good suppressor costs you $800-$900 plus the $200 ATF registration tax and other potential fees and taxes. You would need to decide to file as an individual or trust. A trust is usually the recommended route, where some fees may come in as well to properly setup the trust. Then you wait for 6 months or so.

In contrast, a good 2-3 day defensive pistol class costs you around $500-$600 + ammo costs (think 500-1000 rounds here). After finishing such a class, you actually know how to defend yourself with a handgun on the street. There are a lot of legal, technical and tactical aspects you will learn that could save your life and keep you out of jail one day. You may have significant range shooting experience, but that doesn't mean much on the street. Examples of classes are:

After that, you will realize that carrying a suppressor with you is kind of the last thing you would need in an actual active shooter situation.

Ever shot a gun indoors without earpro? Yeah. I would want to hear my surroundings if I'm not close to the shooter (yet). If urgency is a key **** the suppressor, I'll just leave it in the bag, while on the phone with the police.

Noted. Yes, I realize the suppresor isn't neccesary, but I already have a perfortated eardrum from a flashbang that went off a bit too close. I'm currently in a training class for my ccw at my local gun club run by a (wait for it) former navy seal. Prices are around what you mentioned.

No-one I know carries a suppressor for his carry handgun. Name one firearms instructor or professional that does!

If you have the time to mount a suppressor during an active shooter situation, than you have the time to do more important things that actually could save your live. For example, I would rather mount body armor than a suppressor. 10% permanent loss of hearing is better than 100% permanent loss of life.

Springfield Armory is starting to sell guns with threaded barrels. Although I don't have one of them, I carry an XD.40 subcompact. Remember that if you want suppressed noise, you need to find subsonic ammunition. Subsonic in anything less than .40 S&W is rare and almost custom. The other alternative is to reload your own. Another problem is that if you under charge a small caliber round, you are losing quite a bit of penetrating power. About the only way you are going to get suppressed fire and a full range of ammunition is with a .45 ACP. Good luck...

9mm 147 grain is subsonic, such as Federal HST 147 grain standard pressure (at 1000 fps) and +P (at 1050 fps). Both are well known law enforcement rounds. SGAmmo has the +P round available right now (see Link Removed). Federal HST .40 S&W 180 grain is subsonic as well (at 1010 fps). Also a well known law enforcement round and also currently available at SGAmmo (see Link Removed). Subsonic target ammunition is also available in both calibers.

FYI: Glock sells threaded-barrel models. Also, there are well-known aftermarket threaded Glock barrels, such as Lone Wolf Distributors - Products - Threaded.

If you're not close to the shooter yet you should be figuring out how to get the hell out of there, not worrying about mounting a suppressor.

What kind of school is it?

Generally speaking, taking legal advice from cops isn't a great idea.

He said he was in Colorado and they have had campus carry for something like 15 years.

Instead of wasting your money on a suppressor, why don't you get some quality training. If you have already had good training send the money on practice ammunition. If you are like most students, the budget is limited and it makes sense to get the most benefit from the money that you spend.
