I am wanting to get into long range shooting . I am going with a Remington .308 . What length barrel would be best and what rifle twist in the barrel would be best suited for this type of shooting
any advise will be helpful

24" or longer with 1 in 10, or 1 in 11 twist. These twists work best with 173-175 grain bullets, when shooting ranges over 600 yds. 168 grain bullets will work well out to 600 yds. Match grade cartridges from Federal, or Black Hills, perform well. If you want bench rest precision, load your own.

^^^^^^^^^^This....for every inch under 24"'s you loose this amount of speed vs full length

2000-2500fps +/- 10fps/inch
2500-3000fps +/- 20fps/inch
3000-3500fps +/- 30fps/inch
3500-4000fps +/- 40fps/inch

Why a 308 may I ask? I think a better caliber may be the 6-7mm's which have better ballistic coefficients making them shoot much flatter. 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 x 284 Norma, 6.5 Lapua, 260 Remington and a new one called the 26 Nosler which is a 6.5 in a necked down 30.06 cartridge I believe and shows serious promise. You should look into getting some books on LR shooting too. A recommended one is Long Range Precision Shooting by Anthony Cirincione II. He is an Army sniper/teacher, long range and precision rifle competitor.

Hell, why not a 50 BMG? .308 because it is accurate out to 1000 yds., good ammo is relatively cheap, and readily available, and recoil is fairly light. Also, there are many makes and models of rifles available, chambered in .308. If ranges over 1000 yds. is what you want, get the 300 mag, 338, or 50 BMG. If tack driver, bench rest accuracy is what you are looking for, get the 6mm, or 6.5mm.

I don't know why, but I really want a 338 lapua, even though it's $6 per round lol.
