I have a permit my wife does not. can I leave my loaded firearm in a lockbox, in my vehicle with the key in my pocket and my wife in vehicle? or do I need to unload and store ammo separately?

If you have a permit you can keep the weapon on you. Just curious as to why you think you have to lock your gun away because your wife is in the car? Or maybe I have misread your question.

sorry for the omissions, In Iowa, and I might have business in Federal building and wife waits in car quilting to pass the timeThanks

Looks like you can legally (Iowa law) unload the firearm and put it in the box/safe (doesnt say ammo cannot be in same container/box/safe, just not IN firearm) and as long as your wife has no key (which would qualify as access) then she should be fine.

Read 724.4 Carrying weapons.

1. Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who goes armed with a dangerous weapon concealed on or about the person, or who, within the limits of any city, goes armed with a pistol or revolver, or any loaded firearm of any kind, whether concealed or not, or who knowingly carries or transports in a vehicle a pistol or revolver, commits an aggravated misdemeanor.

...

f. A person who for any lawful purpose carries or transports an unloaded pistol or revolver in a vehicle inside a closed and fastened container or securely wrapped package which is too large to be concealed on the person or inside a cargo or luggage compartment where the pistol or revolver will not be readily accessible to any person riding in the vehicle or common carrier.

why not just get the wife a ccw permit? that would take care of any legal issues that you raised.

Or just leave it with her. Do you think someone will be checking ccw permits of people in cars while you're gone?

What do you mean by leave it with her? In her hands or purse? That would be an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine of $625 to $6,250.

As for the argument of no-one will be checking for carry permits while he is gone, what could possibly go wrong?
