Little help with flying and guns

I am taking a trip from Philadelphia International to Orlando International and never flew taking a gun before. I've read the Philly airport page and I see you have to declare it at baggage ok but, how do you get there from the metal detector and security? Do you declare before it goes through the metal detector? I guess I feel really uneasy especially with the way things have gone and would love to hear how it is done from someone who already did it. I still need to go on Orlando's page to see what their rules are. I'm sure the same but, I will look it up.Thanks

Rules are simple really.
Unloaded gun gets packed in its own container in a piece of checked baggage (in luggage compartment )
To be safe, call your airline carrier as they each have their own rules.

There was a discussion thread on the same issue just a week ago. May be you should read it instead of asking the same forum members to post the same information again in a different thread. Edit: Where do you think the check-in desk is at an airport in relation to the security checkpoint? Why do you think they will let you through the security checkpoint with a firearm?

I know this is probably covered elsewhere but I fly all the time with my carry weapon and you are required to have the unloaded weapon in a hardside container and it will need to be locked with a lock only you have the key to but not until you check it with the airline at their desk which is outside the secure area generally right inside the entry doors. You must declare that you are traveling with a firearm . It's probably not a good idea to blurt out "I HAVE A GUN". A little discretion goes a long way. Each airline has their own declaration card they include with the firearm. Some fill out them for you and some you fill out. Southwest gives you a card to fill out and sign for example. After they are satisfied you will be asked to lock the case and include it inside a larger piece of luggage if you prefer which is what I do and reccomend. You may be asked to wait until your bag clears and may also be asked to open it for inspection. By law TSA isn't allowed to inspect the inside without your knowledge. Give yourself enough time to go through this process because you won't speed it up, I and if there is a long line you may be there a while.

If you include it in a larger bag it will most likely show up on the baggage belt. If it's conspicuous, such as a long gun case, the airline may and likely will hold it and ask for ID.

A quick word about states such as Massachusetts. Without a Mass carry permit, you are legally allowed to fly into Logan for example with a firearm and leave the airport with said firearm as long as you leave it in the locked container and travel directly out of the state to a state you are legal in such as New Hampshire or even Vermont but you can not legally travel back to Logan with your firearm and fly back out. The airport security authority is the Mass state police and they have zero sense of humor about such antics. I know you didn't say anything about an unfriendly 2A state and I know it seems unfair and i concur but thats the law. I thought I'd throw it in for what it's worth
