have searched the forum, didn't find any info on this so this post, if there is a thread sorry if i missed it, but asking...
been hearing and seeing some commercials for insurance in case you end up actually having to shoot someone in self-defense, they say can offset cost of lawyers to defend yourself in the inevitable court battle that follows.
is this a good idea or is it a typical scam?
thanks.

Seems like a good idea. Some that I've seen don't pay unless you are proven not guilty of breaking the law. Some start giving you upfront money and some will recommend lawyers.

Check out the Armed Citizens Legal Network. It's not insurance, it's a fund, headed up by some pretty cool people. If you have to defend yourself, they'll get you $5-$10,000 to hire a lawyer, and more if you go to trial... after they review your case, of course. If it wasn't legitimate self-defense, they won't help you, obviously. Most of them will also be expert witnesses for you as well.

It really depends on your situation. Some places charge $100/year for such a service. Do the math. For a person of age 25 to live to age 75 will be 50 years. If you have this service and the rates don't go up (they will) will cost you $5000 over your lifetime. Chances are you will never need their service. But what if you do?

If you have $5000 now that you could afford to give a lawyer for a retainer, I'd say don't worry about it. If you really would be hard pressed scraping $5000 for a lawyer if you got immersed in our court system, I'd say go for it.

Either way, you probably already should have researched some good lawyers in your area.
