Let's have an honest talk about gun control.

On December 14th, 2012 26 (twenty six) people were taken from this earth before their time. The victims included 20 children, all between 6 and 7 years old. This tragic and senseless crime has destroyed American families. Husbands, wives, mothers and fathers for them life will never be the same. Immediately, and within minutes the media and politicians exploited this tragedy and turned it into an argument for more gun control.

The investigation is ongoing but we have learned quite a bit about the shooter and the firearms that he used to commit the heinous act. Here is what we know:

20 year old Adam Lanza shot and killed his own mother and unlawfully took possession of her legally obtained and owned firearms. Connecticut has what most would deem as strict gun laws. After all, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence rated Connecticut with a 58 of 100 possible points whereas my home state of New Mexico received a 4/100 which lies In the tier 1 (lowest possible according to Brady) of under 10/100. When we examine the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun violence’s “rating map” you’ll see that of the past 3 shootings they have all been in states where they “grade” the state in a Tier 2 or 3 (all of which are over 15/100).

How many gun laws were broken here? How many capital felonies were commited here? 26 Capital felonies, 4 felony firearm thefts an AWB will not curb this problem.

Now that we know that CT had at least some precautions in place to prevent this, yet this tragedy has shocked the nation like no other mass shooting in US History. A politician or lawmaker cannot legislate evil away. In the past 4 days online and local retailers have sold substantial quanities of AR’s, Pistols, Ammunition, and of course Hi-Capacity magazines. I myself have purchased Hi-Cap mags for firearms that I own.
The purpose of this letter is not to tell you my like minded friends that an AWB is wrong as well all know that.

What I want to make known is that firearms rights will not be legislated away in one fell swoop there is too much resistance, Armed resistance. First it is the Hi-Cap magazines, then it’s the semi-automatic rifles, then pistols and before our children or grandchildren are of age we have "amnesty bins" and we're fighting for our Airsoft rights. Even if you are not affected by the proposed AWB please remember Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist, so I said nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then came the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist. And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I did little. Then when they came for me, there was no one left to stand up for me.

The problem with gun control is almost a cliche, "guns don't kill people...........". Now that being said, all the gun control and all the gun laws that anyone can come up with WILL NOT stop these types of horrible events. It is a PERSONAL decision to obey or disobey ANY law. Speed limit is 65, you are doing 66....you violated the law....YOUR CHOICE. The law cannot prevent crimes, only makes events illegal. The personal choice is the issue, which reflects back directly on morals learned as you grew up. Morals that were taught by your parents, teachers, neighbors, and the religious leader of your choice. Granted there are some that are just simply short circuited in the brain area, those are self explanatory. The average Joe is not short circuited though, so any crime committed by him is strictly a moral choice. Unfortunately, the people who make the laws, (which opens a whole new discussion on the procedure of law making) cannot see the forest for the trees. It is up to US to show them common sense and try to guide them through the smoke. This latest event is a major blow to gun ownership freedom. It will be used extensively against us, so to speak. It will be our responsibility to respond timely and with thought and diplomacy. Choose your words wisely and do not project the typical "gun toting redneck" that is typically used when opponents to our beliefs portray us in their campaigns. Contact your congressman, your senators and even email the president with your thoughts. We all abhor this type of violence and behavior. Stand up for our beliefs, but understand the fear that these events create in the general public.
