LEO encounter while PGR mission

I was at a Patriot Guard Mission and an officer was there on duty to do the escort. Anyhow he ended up coming up to me and talking with me while I was utilizing my ccw permit. I handed him the card and didnt say anything, he asked me if i had it right now and I said yes. His whole demeanor changed right then, he walked off, put his cruiser as a barrier between us, and got on the phone. Within 15 minutes two other officers came up to the funeral and had a big discussion. One of the officers that came by was obviously a supervisor. The supervisor was all calm and cool with everything and the rookie (first officer) always kept a barrier between us. Soon the officers were talking with the ride captain and you could tell it was about me as the rookie kept on pointing in my direction. There was nothing else that came of it as we went to do the flag line soon and the officers went on about their business. I guess this shows that the rookie officers are not really as cool with CCW as the supervisors. And that a bunch of bikers (several of them patched) carrying guns is probably what rookie cops dream of at night.

If the officer hadnt acted all weird about everything I could have put him at ease by showing him my badge. I am a Sergeant for the State of Oklahoma Department of Corrections. But whats the fun in that right?

From the title I was wondering what Project Gotham Racing and law enforcement were going to mix!

Fresh out of training meets real world.

Good thing you did not cause any dishonor to the fallen soldier by "utilizing" your CCW.. What does that mean,, showin off your piece????/ We are here to pay our honor and repects to the fallen and protect the families from the wacko who try to disrupt the ceremony... How proud would you have been had you caused a scene at a soldiers funeral. As a Senior Ride Captain I would be looking at your actions very closely. I to have a CCW and carry a M&P40c but very very few even are aware. What did you have to prove by this...????? Who cares if you are a DOC person... You are there for the family and soldier and should conduct youself accodingly. IF DOC you should be held to a higher standard realtive to firearms.. If you cannot muster the respect needed maybe you should try something else.

I'll offer a slightly different perspective. I read that "utilizing" made reference to just carrying. In my jurisdiction, we are required by law to immediately identify we are permitted and tell the officer that we are indeed carrying.

So the first part of the encounter sounds lawful, and proper to me.

I do not know what additional privilege your DOC position entitles you to, perhaps it makes your CCW moot as many swarn officers have a different set a criteria for when and where they carry.

The part where my local laws disagree, is that while participating in a parade or public demonstration we are not allowed to carry.

I think the more we see LEO's as friendly and act "normal" the more as ease they will become, bravado has no place when using our CCW. Save it for demonstrating your prowess on the range or proper competition.

Full stop. I will not once not ever be called disrespectful or anything close. I am deeply offended that you would accuse me of this instead of ask a question if you didnt understand my post.

I am required by law to inform an officer if he contacts me for whatever reason. "showin off my piece" is something done by people that have no business carrying. That is at no time what I did. Period. full stop. end of story. My piece was never unconcealed and I wouldnt have informed the officer but i was required too by law.

I have some other choice words for you but I will maintain myself on this forum.

This quote is from my original post

" handed him the card and didnt say anything, he asked me if i had it right now and I said yes. "

How you guys get that I was "showin off my piece" or "bravado" from that I will never know. IF I WAS SHOWING OFF MY PIECE HE WOULDNT HAVE HAD TO ASK ME IF I HAD IT WITH ME!!!!

But on a side note one you just joined this month and one of you January of this year so I wouldn't expect you to know how the forums work.

He is a classic example of someone jumping to conclusions without enough facts. Just what our country in general is going through - statement, then invective. Personally, I believe that snidley237 owes Austin an apology.

Austin - Thank you for your PG work.. You earn my respect as you do not just appreciate the military and veterans, but put feet and hands to your appreciation..

Sorry for the issue with the rookie cop.. Hopefully his fellow officers explained a thing or two to him after they left.. Explained to him things like:
by having the card in the 1st place means you have been fully checked out,
you have paid the $$$ required and had appropriate training,
and that by having the card you are one of the good guys and not a bad guy who wouldn't take the time/money, they would just carry..

The fact that you were doing PG duty should have been enough for the PO to suspect that you are on the good side...

So what is "while I was utilizing my ccw permit" waving it around in the air?????? Maybe you should check out the word "concealed" in Websters.... FULLSTOP...... Why would you have this out for the public to view???? Especially at a PGR Mission.....That is what burns me the most.... Do what you want in the supermarket parking lot but not on a funeral mission....Pure lack of good judgement,,, in my opinion..... ""If the officer hadnt acted all weird about everything I could have put him at ease by showing him my badge. I am a Sergeant for the State of Oklahoma Department of Corrections. But whats the fun in that right? Those are your words.... If you want to antagonize the LEO, espaecially at an important mission for the PGR you do not belong there... We need the LEO to understand we are law abiding responsible citlzens and not HOT DOGS trying to have fun at LEO expense, which affects us all.... You should apologize to the Ride Captain AND THE FAMILY,,,,for jepoardizing the FUNERAL AND ESCORT MISSION for a soldier...

All I have to say is, I send a friend request to Austin, and added snidley to my ignore list.Link Removed

A lot of police support the 2nd Amendment. Some don't. Those have what I call an elitist attitude. Also sad to say not all police know or understand the law and many have no idea what the Constitution says. I know this to be true because I spent a few years in law enforcement.

It's impossible for BG to attack citizens at a funeral, so I'd have to agree with snidley237 and say that Austin was totally paranoid in CCing while on a PGR mission. :bad:

Now in the real world, responsible gun owners know that bad things can happen to good people at any time. With that in mind, I CC wherever legally possible. If the PGR mission was jeopardized by anyone, it would be by the rookie cop who handled the situation poorly.

Take a chill pill snidley, the funeral went on without a hitch. As a member of the military, if it were my funeral, I'd be happy to see that my family and friends were being protected by people like Austin. Having worked in the funeral industry, and having served on many color guards, I'm full aware that immediate family members have a lot on their mind during the funeral. Their personal safety is usually not their first priority.

Good going Austin. Thanks for your service on PGR missions!

all i can say is full on idiot. there WAS NEVER anything stated about waving it around.. stop tryin to be a keybord warrior. ur making urself look dumb!

I ride every PGR mission that I can, from Buffalo to Syracuse and Lake Ontario into PA.
And there have been quite a few.
And I carry all the time.
Its not that I think that I'll be robbed or attacked at a funeral, but sometimes there is a long distance to travel and you never know when your going to return home or where you may breakdown.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for the fallen troops and there families and in no way would I bring shame on them or the PGR.
Some people I ride with know I carry all the time and I don't advertise it to the PGR, but if they found out and asked me not to carry I would have to stop riding with them.

Ride and carry.

I have attended more than my share of funerals over the last several years both for relatives and friends. I am getting to that age when one expects it I guess. Anyway there has never been a funeral that I was not packing. I have said it before and I say it again, until I become clairvoyant I will carry every place I go.

TROLL with 9 posts and ignorant grammer. Obviously not able to comprehend basic English prose. Fail. Ignore.

I thought he meant he was carrying. How could you possibly think anything else? I was taught to read every word in the sentence to fully understand it. Your logic is at best flawed.

Actually I believe the fault is mine. While pondering what the problem might be I believe that the mis-communication is none other than my fault.

Having carried for several years I have began to develop a bad habit of calling the concealed carry license a CCW, which to people new to carrying and these forums could rightfully determine to mean Concealed Carry Weapon. I guess I should start calling in an Oklahoma Self Defense Act Concealed Firearm Permit or OK.S.D.A.C.F.P. for short.

Upon reflection I have also determined that I need to apologize for losing my temper. These forums have helped me immensely and I need to respect them as such. I would hate for someone that is brand new to this site to look on here and see me losing my temper and consider that the normal for this site, which I can personally assure that it is not.

Hindsight is truly 20/20

My only thought to add here is in the definition of "contact".As in the law says when "contacted by law enforcement".I don't know about you but to me that doesn't mean when a LEO comes up to "shoot the bull" with me.To me that means I am being QUESTIONED about something to do with a CRIME he thinks I either 1,have commited,or 2,I have knewledge of.Personally,I don't feel like if he just wants to "talk about the weather" he needs to know I am carrying, sorry but that is how I interpret the law.
