Lake City Man Drops Gun in Wal-Mart and Discharges

A man in Lake City dropped his handgun in a Wal-Mart. It was in a holster but discharged when it hit the ground. Luckily no one was hurt. Being that he was booked with Culpable Negligence and Improper Exhibition of a Firearm, I'm assuming he has a concealed carry permit because if not it would have been a felony. I haven't seen any reports confirming either way.

While I hate hearing about these type of incidents, we should all take a second and remember that you should have a high quality SECURE holster and know where your firearm is AT ALL TIMES!

That would suck. I've carried for almost a year and fortunately no incidents. That's what I like about a DAO, it's almost impossible for it to accidentally go off. Almost. I would never say never when it comes to guns.

I would like to know what kind of firearm this was. Most modern guns have a firing pin block, to make them drop safe. Cheaper guns with inertia firing pins may discharge when dropped.

Can anyone expand on which guns are not safe when dropped.
I know the Beretta M9 & the 8000 Cougar has firing pin block. I'm not sure that the PPK/S has a firing pin block. Does anybody have definitive info on this?

Hm. Sounds like someone went out and bought a cheapo holster....Never regret spending the little extra for something with tension screws. Hope everything works out for this guy, thank god noone was hurt.

I think we are jumping to conclusions, We do not know what type of firearm he had or the holster he was using.

We are asumming that he had a cheap firearm and holster.
We know that it was dropped and then discharged and nobody got hurt.

(assuming here, bear with me). the gun drops and hits the ground barrel first and discharges, so nobody gets hurt. or he pulls the trigger by accident while the gun is pointing at the ground. so it gets dropped.

anything could of happened. But I agree with Luke.

if you carry, Get a reliable gun and holster. But most important We as CCW holders need to excersice caution and safe firearm handling at all times.

public incidents like this will give ammo to the gun control lobby, lets doublecheck our rigs and our guns and make extra sure we are carrying safe.

I agree with you completely. I think that if an incident like this occurred the gun make and caliber should be publicly known. Not only would this help the consumer with a decision in what weapon to carry, but also the manufacture should know that their weapon could need a recall to fix potential problems. But that is my 2 cents.

Accidental Discharge

Typical of American newspapers, they are so worried about being first to cover a story, they mangle the story so all information is suspect. The article in the papers states in the first paragraph that the weapon fell out of the holster and discharged. Then, in the second paragraph, the weapon, in the holster fell and shot through the holster. Which was it? The two statements are mutually exclusive. I do feel that the gentleman used poor judgement either in the holster selection or the weapon. I would love to have the REAL story.

to me it seems that calling this an accident may be misleading. i mean no offence but i believe that this incident is the result of some poor choices. accident implies that he had no control and the reality is he did. first the firearms safety device. was it engaged? it was his responsibility to make sure the safety was on. even if he had done this was it a poorly made gun? he had the responsibility to edcucate himself and make sure the gun had adequate safety features. then in the manner in which it was carried he had the responsibility to make sure the gun would not fall out. this is the hardest thing of all as you want instant easy access to your gun but also want it secure. i realize that we can all come up with scenerios where the gun might pop out but as responsible gun owners IT IS UP TO US TO BE AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE. NO EXCEPTIONS NO EXCUSES
