Knives as secondary or primary defense.

I have watched several self defense videos for CCW. Many provide methods to guard your gun and prevent it being taken or turned on you. Some have used knives as a primary defense to protect your firearm or secondary if attacked by more than one bad guy. My question is, what are your opinions regarding a good CCW knife. Outside of small flip assist knives, I have not seen any with a CC sheath. I live in WI so switchblades are not a choice. Thanks for your suggestions.

I carry a flip assist knife every day (Kershaw Brawler). I know you wanted to know the practically of carrying more of a combat knife but let me say this: Even a knife with a 2 inch or smaller blade can be deadly when weilded as a weapon. Carrying a knife serves the purpose as a weapon as well as a tool. Knives that fold can be concealed easily but still serve the purpose of being combat effective. Also, you do want to be careful when drawing a knife in defense in the same way as drawing a firearm. It is not somehow Less use of force. Maybe I'll check some of the vids out there about this subject as you did but as it stands, my opinion is to guard your gun by concealing it if that is what you're worried about. Also seek empty hand defense training. With a little practice and surfing the internet for ideas you could make your own kydex ccw sheath for your knife.

I carry a serrated Spiderco Delica less for self-defense, but mostly because I find it's often useful to have a sharp knife handy in my day-to-day existence.
If you want a sweet CC knife, look into a Gerber Guardian. Mine's 30 years old, but they still make them.

I really am not trying to be a smart-alec, but just want to make sure I understand your purpose for seeking this advice.

On point [1], you're saying that "many" self defense videos depict using a knife to guard your gun from being taken from you? My first thought is, if I'm guarding my gun with deadly force (a knife), why am I not guarding my life with deadly force (my gun) instead? Stabbing and slashing at a hand, arm or body of someone trying to take my gun from me seems a rather haphazard way to retain my weapon in its holster, not to mention that I could very easily stab or slash myself in the process considering that I wear holsters that hold my weapon as close into my body as I can find and afford.

On point [2], am I understanding correctly that you've seen videos of someone demonstrating fighting one guy with a knife in one hand (in the multiple BG scenario mentioned) while fighting another guy(s) with a gun in your other hand at the same time? Like I said, just trying to understand what you're asking. I likely do misunderstand. I seriously hope I am misunderstanding that in fact, but on the off-chance that I'm not, may I suggest that you have nothing useful to learn from such videos or self defense "instructors," as gun-play is definitely not something you incorporate into things you do while "multitasking."

As far as concealing a knife, the ones I know of that are made for concealing are called "neck knives." They are almost always small fixed blades and have a chain or leather thong or cordage attached to the sheath to hang it around your neck and conceal it under your shirt or jacket or whatever. There are tons of different Link Removed, and most custom knife-makers make 'em too.

If you're committed to a folding knife in some kind of concealable sheath, while there may very well be an off-the-shelf knife/sheath combo that I'm unaware of, you will probably find it easier to locate a good custom sheath-maker who can make one to fit the folding knife you like best, or already own as the case may be.

If you are carrying a firearm and can get to only one lethal weapon (on the force continuum a knife and a firearm are both deadly), go for your firearm. If someone is actively trying to grab at my firearm, I will try to fend them off with my strong hand (or duck and move away if able), while I grab my flip assist CRKT Ken Onion from my left pocket and stab the crap out of his arms and hands until he lets go.

This is one of the reasons I keep my flip assist in my left pocket. However, if someone has gotten so close to me to put their hands on my firearm and attempt to get it out of my holster, my SA has gone to scheisse and I probably should train to be more aware of my surroundings instead.

I have to echo Blues thoughts on using both a knife and a firearm while being attacked by two or more persons. How in the world could you use either properly while using them both at the same time? {Seriously, Blues "multitasking"? Love it.** Grab the firearm and shoot them both. Don't try to be a knife master and a gun master at the same time.

I always carry one or two folding knives, and/or a tactical Knife (boot knife) if I have on boots as backups to my CC gun.

I carry a kbar tdi. If I were to need a knife for self defense, I feel a fixed blade is the fastest deployment and the strongest design. YMMV.

Just like everything else I've decided to carry, chances are I'll never need to use them, but they were important enough in my mind to have the tool on me in case I need it.
