Knife for everyday carry

I have been want to buy a good knife to carry in my back pocket. I don't know a lot about knives. I have noticed that you can spend $10 to $210 for a knife. I don't want a cheap nice, but I don't want an expensive knife. I understand that the price goes with the type of blade the knife is made of. What else should I look at when buying a knife? I don't want to spend more than $50-$75. Are the Gerber Bear Gryls knives decent? Should I invest in a big name brand like Benchmade? Any information will be helpful.

On the high end of your price range I can highly recommend the Benchmade Griptilian. Low end look into the Spyderco Tenacious

First, you need to decide what you need the knife for.
I carry a Gerber multitool (60$?) every day along with a Buck 110 folder (??$) and i use the multitool far more often

+2 for CRKT, great tools at great prices.

I carry a Hissatsu folder (paid around $70) in my front pocket for defensive purposes and a folding Razel with Veff serrations (about $25) for utility in my opposite back pocket. Money well spent IMO, they are both great tools!

Well if your state allows you to carry it, go with any auto push button open(switch blade.) Decide what your carrying the knife for, EDC use, opening mail, cutting open packages, eating etc.. Or are you carrying it for self defense? I carry two knifes, one for EDC use and one just for self defense. Reason why is so my defensive blade always stays razor sharp, should I ever have to defend myself with a knife.

Gerbers are a ok budget knife, but they suck at holding an edge, I find myself resharpening the blade after just a little use. Gerber assisted opening knives are a great choice for a self defense knife.

Kershaw's are a better choice over Gerber, they hold an edge longer and take less work to get that razor edge on the blade.

CRKT are outstanding blades and stay razor sharp for a vary long time, I have been carrying a CRKT M16 for over two years now and it's still sharp.

Having owned and used/carried all of the above blades, the CRKT and Kershaw are my main go to blades, with a Gerber riding in my EDC bag.

Our state just lifted the ban on citizens carrying auto blades(before you could own them, but only on duty LEO,Fire,EMS,military could carry them.) When I get the funds I plan on buying and carrying a Spyderco Citadel auto blade.

Another great choice for a defensive blade is the Ka-bar TDI, I carried one on my belt for about a year.

I Have carried a knife everyday for at least 15 years and now I only carry a multi tool . leatherman new wave

I carry it with the pocket clip Link Removed

I also have the bit kit Link Removed
but it was kinda a waste of $$ for me.

I use this thing daily and it does very well.

You need to find out your intended use.

LOL, I see your Leatherman Wave and raise you a Leather Wave. I never leave home without my Leatherman Wave, I have carried it for years now. Sadly mine was stolen so I replaced it with the "tactical" black Leatherman about a year and half ago. Truth be told I only got the black because it was on sale at the time, if I had to do it over again I would never buy it. The powder coating on it is CRAP, spent the first few months cleaning it off. Every time I touched it my hands would be covered in black coating. The black one comes with the Molle webbing case, I can't stand it, I loved the leather case so much more. I did buy the extra bits and screw driver extender, and they all fit in the Molle case.

Love how razor sharp the knifes are, I find myself slicing open even the toughest plastic claim shell packages.

I, too, carry 2 knives. A little one (2-2 1/2" blade) in my front pocket for everyday use and a larger one either in a back pocket on in my off side front pocket on a clip for self defense. When I was younger, it was a 3 blade Schrade stocksman and a cheap Pakistani lockblade with about a 4 inch blade. Now, I can afford better knives. My front pocket knife is usually either a SOG Twitch II or a 2 blade Case Barlow. The second knife is either a SOG Pentagon II or a CRKT M21-04 (that's the M16 series bigger brother with a smooth edge and a spear point instead of the tanto). All of them will take a good edge and keep it.

Another of my favorites -although I find it too light to carry- is a Benchmade liner lock based on the automatic they carry that was designed by Mel Pardue. That one will get so sharp it's scary.

2 knives for EDC - one for utility & tool purposes, ( it varies.) -- And Spyderco w/wave feature for purely self-defense use.
Spyderco wave will only be used in life threatenng situatuions. If you carry a knife for self-defense, training with it is as important as firearm training. Forget everything you ever saw about knives in the movies. For knife guys, " Hank Reinhardt's Book of Knives - a Practical & Illustrated Guide to Knife Fighting".

I always carry one in each front pocket and along with a Gerber Multitool in a belt pouch. I'm a lefty and I carry one of several different knives in my left front pocket. Currently it's a SOG Trident but sometimes it's a Zero Tolerance BT301 (awesome but pricey) or a CRKT M16. In the right pocket I always have a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. It's a terrific knife, holds an edge very well and it's super lightweight.

If I could only have one tactical knife, I'd probably go with the Benchmade.

I have been carrying a SOG of one type or another for 10 yrs. they have the SOG automatics for about 120. Or the same knife as a flip open for about 65. Great blades.

There have been some good answers to this thread already (Kershaw, SpyderCo etc.) but I would add, the more you look around the more you'll find something that size-wise and in terms of how it handles is in your comfort zone (easy to handle given your particular hands, and operate with one hand). And you'll pay a little more, but the best ones are going to be US made, IMHO.

Now if you are looking for something on the cheap, a utilitarian beater, pick up a Tool Logic. Mine has a magnesium firestarter and a light (which actually works well as a light to inspect my bore / barrel in addition to occasional evening light needs). Has a sturdy pocket clip on it. It's here: SLPro Silver- Fire - Knives It also comes in a rescue blade version. Downside: Made in China. Again, the preference should be made in USA.

I carry a Kershaw assisted opening blade for for defense only. A CRKT for everyday cutting chores and a small Swiss Army Knife for small cutting and the few tools it comes with.
