Kel Tec PF9

Just curious of how many people carry a Kel Tec PF9 or any Kel Tec for that matter. As you may have assumed I have a PF9 and have heard so much negative press about them. It is a newer model bought in 2011(don't know if that makes a difference or not) I haven't had any issues with it as of yet shot maybe 200 rounds through it. I don't shot it a lot bought it on a whim it was cheap so I went for it. It is not a gun for going to the range and shooting 100's of rounds at a time. As I said I bought the gun because I got a good deal. Now I am thinking of using it for summer carry it’s small it goes into a pocket (pocket holster of course) and now I am thinking about getting an IWB. With all the negative press I am curious of your experiences good or bad. I have thought about selling it and getting the Kahr CM9 to replace but don’t have the cash right now. At the time I bought it I really wanted the Kahr PM9 but way out of my price range and at the CM9 wasn’t available nor was the Ruger LC9 another gun I am thinking about trading it in for. Thanks

I have/carry a p-11. I have been very disappointed..
the magazine rattles, I contacted the company and was told they were aware of the issue and were working on it and would issue a replacement magazine...that was over a year ago with no response and no replacement.
Also- the gun is rusting terribly, I've tried oiling it but the rust keeps coming back & is now spreading.

I'm getting rid of mine, going to trade it in for something, not sure what yet, but anything would be an improvement in my mind.
good luck

I have never shot the PF9 but I had the P-11. Didn't like it at all. My buddy had the same gun as well and we both got rid of them. Not a KelTec fan

I had a PF9 for about a year. Needed some cash so sold it. Sorry I did. Replaced it later with a Ruger LC9. while I like the looks and feel of the Ruger, I liked the trigger on the PF9 much better.

Pick up a LC9 and shake it, rock solid.
Pick up a Kel Tec and shake it, more noise than a baby's rattle.
Practice with the LC9, trigger problem will go away.

I dont think the PF9 is a problematic gun. The P11 was an older design and much different gun.

I've carried a P-3AT for 5 years and trust it totally.

My advice is this... if you have shot it enough where you trust it with your life then carry it. If not, shoot it some more and if it doesnt win you over then get rid of it.

I carry a PF-9 every day. I've found that its perfect "for me". Its thin, light, is very concealable and works every time I pull the trigger. It is not a piece of cake that is perfect for everyone, so don't be disheartened when someone does not prefer it. For me it does the job I ask it to -- go bang repeatedly when I pull the trigger...

I have chosen the PF-9 to be my last resort tool in times of distress. I am comfortable with it and have to the best of my ability tested it over and over.

I have a Kel-tec PF-9 and carry it all the time.

never had a problem with it...I also have a Khar CW( and CM9...they kick less than the Kel-tec

the PF9 will set you back about 279-299.....the Khar CM9 or CW9 are abou 375 -399.

Good luck...!

for the Ruger LC9 guy...the trigger is different every time.

on the kel-tec it is long, but you can stage it with practice.

My Kel-tec PF9 does not rattle...My kel-tec does not have a magazine safety and a manual safety to will work against me in a time of need.

My kel-tec PF9 is a load it and forget it.

bottom line is...it is your gun, it is you life..if you can trust the gun with your life then carry it.

if not, then find it a new home.

a gun is a tool, not a brand...do not be a brand myopic person...that is more unsafe than anything else...use what works for you and keep it simple.

I carry a PF-9 in the summer (iwb) when I can't dress for my UC II - had it for abt 4 years and no problems after the first 200 rnds... not a fun range gun but goes bang when I ask it to and feeds every HP round I've ever put in it... biggest advantage I can see to a "nicer" gun is you'll spend time with it at the range (or better, shooting it in IDPA or USPSA matches), which will make you more familiar with it...

I love my PF-9. It's not my primary gun, but it makes a great cc gun especially during summer. I regularly put about 100 rounds through it about every other month. Never had a lick of trouble with it. Had it for a couple years, now.

Thanks for the input I don't hate the gun as a matter of fact I like it shoot it pretty good. I guess i got caught up in the hype. As I said I just never saw the amount of negative press or even the hate on a specific gun maker as Kel Tec. I would like to do a few modifications to the gun one being the mag release because I have had issues and hear that Kel Tec has a fix I need to find out what it is. I even thought of cerakote for the slide and barrel. It is not rusting because I keep it oiled but, when I start carrying it I hear they tend to rust because of the heat moisture etc... it is the blued finish which I know was a mistake. Thanks again and keep the comments coming.

I have had my PF9 for 2yrs. with no failures of anykind. As stated by others it does have a long trigger pull but that is what a DAO is, mine is very predictable so I have learned to shoot it well. I use it as a BUG mostly but on occasion I use it when making a quick trip to town. The one issue I have is that the barrel tends to have major copper fouling, it is a bear to clean! I think it is a glitchin the barrel rifling, a new barrel would most likely fix it, but it works fine for me.

I haven't had any failures except unexpected mag release. I started innocently by looking for others who had the same mag problem like I was and man I was shocked at what I found. That's what got me thinking I wasn't even thinking getting rid of it till I saw some of the issues people were having. I have no problem with the trigger or the recoil. Don't get me wrong I am not shooting 2-3 hundred through it at a time but maybe 2-3 mags through it just to keep it going and to practice with it. Does anyone have any experience shooting Hornady TAP 124 grain hollow point ammo through their PF9? That is what I use for my Glock G19 for carry and am going to try the Hornady. I have been shooting 124 grain through it of what ever is on sale ammo for practice.

I have a PF9 and like it but I quit carrying it because I couldn't find defensive ammo that it would reliably feed. Tried two different name brands of ammo and with each brand I had 1-2 misdeeds per magazine. It runs ball ammo without fail. I do like the gun and love the size and weight, but started carrying my G27 until I find reliable defensive ammo for the PF9. I am open to suggestions from those that have experience with specific ammo.

PF-9 here since 2010 and not one problem at all. I carry it only on wkends whether I'm at home around the house or out doing erronds, etc. For work/my job I do not carry it because........no firearms are allowed! So, I carry my North American Arms .22 five shot which conceals even better, for work. They do not know nor do I say anything. Clip on my belt IWB with my shirt covering it.
I was looking for a small, thin, light weight 9mm, and at the time I think there were like 3-4 to choose from. I ended up picking the PF-9 and I paid $330. then. I asked for another magazine and the dealer would not throw one in for me, so I ended up buying a 2nd mag for like $15.-$20., I forget.

I agree with stingray2100. The only problem I ever had with my PF-9 was when using cheap Russian steel cased ammo (BTW, the owners manual states "do not use steel cased ammo"). The problem with the Tulammo was that about 10% of the time it took more than one strike to fire the junk. Never had a problem with Winchester or Federal. It's very lightweight, very concealable, but I don't find it much fun to shoot. I have other guns that are fun to shoot, but they lack the compact size and/or punch of my Kel-Tec.

I have a PF-9 and carry every day. Shooting about 400 rnds and had FTE of about 5%. Contacted the company and they sent a replacement ejector kit (ejector, spring, and screw; installed the kit and no FTE. I like the weapon; it is light and easy to conceal; I use a DeSantis IWB and it is very comfortable. I like the PF-9.

As I know little about the make I'll refrain from comments of good or bad. You do need to shoot it more if you're going to carry it, though. I plan on shooting my Ruger SR9c at least once a month, about what I've done so far.
