Kel-Tec PF9 Impressions

B2Tall

Stirrer of the Pot
Picked up a PF9 earlier this week and took it to the range today. Been looking for a pocket-sized 9mm for a little while now. I've heard and read a lot of good things about it and when I had a chance to handle a co-worker's PF9 I decided to make the jump.

70 rounds with 1 FTF (possilby my fault. It was the 3rd round fired. Didn't happen again) and 1 FTE. Both malfunctions were cleared with a quick pull of the slide and the gun was ready to fire again.

On the downside, the fit & finish is nothing to brag about although it's about what I expected from a $289 pistol (I got the hard chrome slide. It's a little more expensive). The mag release is located in a spot that's a little inconvenient for me as it's right where I like to put my thumb. I had to concentrate on keeping my thumb up a little in order not to drop the mag. The trigger sits a bit forward within the trigger guard making for a tight fit for anyone with thick fingers.

On the upside, the recoil was actually pretty reasonable considering how small and light the pistol is. The sights are good and highly visible in spite of being low-profile. Accuracy was very good....well within what you'd need from a pistol like this. Other than the lone FTF and FTE, the action was pretty smooth.

I won't start carrying this pistol until I get 200-300 rounds through it but so far so good.

B2TALL. Welcome to the Kel-Tec family. I really like my PF-9. Carry it everyday in a Comp-Tac IWB. Your right the finish is nothing to brag about. If you will go to the KTOG forum you will find tons of information about this unit. I did have to send mine to Kel-Tec when I first got it but they returned promptly and I have not had a problem since. My problem was the mag dropping out when fired. Know what your talking about with the mag release but made sure I wasn't the issue. Kel-Tec has excellent customer service and will fix anything you find wrong. Lifetime warranty. Just call em.

Not sure what model I had first, smaller than than the PF9? Swapped it for the PF9, used, with two magazines, fired my Pro Reloads (IDPA 147g 915fps) no problems.

I might want to try a new spring on that Magazine release, very sensitive!

A server from our favorite restaurant came out with my Wife and I to the Range, shot a Glock19, 3 months ago? Did well.

So, she wanted to have some protection, purse size, my latest acquisition, a Taurus 709 Slim, stainless, she fired first, on our second trip, on Thursday, then the PF9. Both perfect.

Shot the test with the PF9, 98%, and liked it. The Ladies get escorted to their cars on closing, but going home on her own at 1AM? So that is what she will most likely do, pick up a PF9, and be armed (not a soft Lady!) for that walk to her front door!

Thanks, Mike. I'll keep an eye on the mag release issue. I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service and that definitely contributed to my decision to buy.

Excellent little gun. I have the Kel-tec PF9 parkarized...If you are going to purchase one get the parkarized version or the crome version.
I love mine..carry it on a Galco IWB LH 2nd ammendment holster...

it is light, accurate and you can not beat the price...And there customer service is excellent.

the recoil is not bad at all..!

Congratulations! You'll be glad you chose the HC. I love mine, but have to keep oil on the blued slide or it will rust. After 500+ rounds, I'm very confident with mine and carry it often.

Now that I've put seveal hundred rounds through it, I'm completely comfortable carrying my PF9. Money well spent.

I have had my PF9 for a little over a month now. I have the one with the OD green grip. I really like this little pistol. It was exactly what I was looking for. I will put another 100 rounds through it this week. That will make about 350 rounds. Happy shooting!
