Keeping it concealed?

I know someone that has a concealed carry permit in my state of Va. who told me when he goes to a restaurant that he has no problem taking his coat off and exposing his weapon whether it's a shoulder holster or outside waistband. I would think that would make some customers squirm. I realize that in our state you can open carry without a permit but he doesn't mind if his coat is open and seen or not. I too have a concealed carry permit but I am not comfortable showing off what I am carrying. Do you feel he is doing right even though it is legal?

Thanks in advance for your opinions

I have to agree with fuhr52. It is whatever you are most comfortable with. Some make the arguement, if they see you have it, you might be the first target, then again, it may make the bad guy reconsider his action. I am sure there are 1001 arguements for and against. I wish we had the option.

I often do that same thing but it has nothing to do with "making a statement" or "trying to flash my sidearm". I do it just as a natural thing if it's warmer inside where I'm going than it was outside. Like if I go out to eat and the inside temp is nicely comfortable, I'll remove my jacket but I don't make a big deal about the sidearm, it's just a natural part of me now.

When it happens to me, I don't worry about it. Most people walk around in a daze and don't even notice. In the event they do, I'm not concerned. People need to get used to it. If we keep cowering, things will never get better. Now I'm not saying I carry with abandon, I'm just saying that in the occasional times where it happens, I really don't care.

I agree with tangodown. I CC in VA as well, but at times if my conceal is only a jacket and I decide to take it off in a restaurant, it's No big deal. I'm not looking to expose it, just to be more comfortable. In fact I normally as for a both and my carry side is usually against the wall of the booth. Everyday when I ride the train back into downtown, there is always an older gentleman that walks around town open carrying, he can do that. And I think in his case he lives around there, since there has been some crime in the area, I think it serves him well that nobody messes with him.

Why would he care? If its legal, its legal. Makes no difference if it shows or not. I think he is doing what is right for him. If I could carry openly, I would... just because I could. If we don't exercise our right to carry, we'll never get the public educated.

I am a fellow Virginian as well. As previously noted, the "revealing" is legal and a matter of personal preference. It's not for me though. I keep mine concealed whenever possible. My biggest concern is that some jack-wagon with an agenda might claim "brandishing". That said, I am a lot less worried about printing. Most everyone in this area thinks it's cell phone if they see a bulge.

Who cares? Why should I be uncomfortable by not taking my coat off because someone else is uncomfortable by the sight of my perfectly legal sidearm. That's their problem not mine. We will never desensitize this country if continue to hide what we do. The west was won with guns, when did we forget this? I am not making a statement or flashing my sidearm, i'm living my life within my rights and if they can't handle that they should stay home.

I'm in Pa and in some places I go I do feel uncomfortable exposing my firearm but being that it's legal I honestly could care less what others feel and just go about my business.....I really would like to open carry more but just don't want to create the hysteria it would likely cause in the city

Don't take this personally, but I think that is what causes the "hysteria". If we all open carried it would be normal. If it was normal the fear of the uneducated would not be there. People fear the unknown and a visible side arm is so uncommon it is the unknown now. Had we all been wearing them visible for ever people would make a point to understand if they cared at all, and would probably join us in the carry practices once they did understand it's not an evil gun, but in fact a tool.

I keep both of my guns concealed, I am comfortable with my manhood!

You can't come up with anything original? You have to steal childish comments off the Brady Campaign website to repeat here? Too bad your IQ isn't as big as your manhood apparently is, maybe your brain has been deprived of blood flow too long.

he may feel that way because 1. VA is an open carry state and 2. because until recently if you wanted to consume alcoholic beverages you had to OCing

OC is a choice not a statement.

Live in Ohio and there are days I conceal well what I carry, others that I don't really care and then the days I clearly OC. Since these are all legal with a CHL (OC doesn't require CHL) I exercise those 2A Rights freely. To date I have not had a single problem with anyone, anywhere. Whatever your friend is comfortable with support him, if your uncomfortable with OC I know your friend will support you too.
