Keeping a weapon in my car

I'm fairly new to the carry community and I was wondering (since I live in Florida) what is the acceptable amount of time/temperature to keep a loaded weapon in my car?

you can leave it there as long as you like, the only way the gun will fire without pulling the trigger is if the inside of your car was on fire, and the gun was in the fire, the inside temp can get to 150+ in 100 degree direct sunlight, your gun would have to go well over twice that to fire, I would not ever do it, but if you are that afraid of it going boom, do not chamber a round, then if by chance it was in a car fire the gun would not fire, the rounds in the mag may go off but they wont do anything except go bang, if fact if you were to put bullits in a fire and they detonated, the brass will do more damage than the projectile

Howdy,

It's not going to hurt the gun.

The only thing you have to worry about is the high temps causing the gunpowder to deteriorate.

I've had extra ammo in my vehicles for years. Since the ammo is kept inside my GHB's I don't worry about the heat or cold. However, in the hot & humid south moisture is the biggest enemy; so, I keep desiccant or silica packs in with my ammo.

It takes an extreme amount of heat to "cook-off" a round, don't worry about it being in your car unless you live in Hell. The gun won't be harmed either, although, if the humidity is high (like in Fla.) I have found that a light coat of oil every week or so is a good rust preventative. As good practice, though not absolutely required, I'd shoot the rounds stored in the vehicle at least every few months just to be sure there's no "oh sh!ts!!!" at the most inopportune times.

I can not see keeping a gun in a car unless you are in the car. If the car is stolen then the perp has a gun also. Or if someone overhears you have a gun in the car they break in and steal it. Better to keep a gun on your person. But if you keep a gun in the car take with you if you leave the vehicle. :dirol:

In the best of all possible worlds, but for those of us who, in Florida, work at a state university where we cannot carry but can and do want to have the firearm in the vehicle to and from work, live with this possibility. I would say it should be secured within the vehicle. I know some will say to ignore campus policy for the sake of 2A, but I am not ready to become forcibly unemployed or worse quite yet. Over-zealous and under-trained university police in this liberal paranoid climate would probably make me a national headline.

Plus 1 on the Over zealous & under trained campus police.

I remember going to my car one night carrying a large golf umbrella because it was going to be storming later that night when I returned to campus. After I pulled out of the parking lot I was stopped and forced out of my car at gun point because one such campus police officer had seen me and called in a MwG over the radio.

It was a bit harry at first. But, we all had a laugh about it afterwards and the young officer was completely embarrassed by the whole thing.

On a slightly different note-
I need to remember how I carry an umbrella must be watched carefully because I had a meeting at a local church the other day. It was raining off & on so I carried my black golf umbrella into the building with me. A few minutes later when the guy I was meeting came around the corner he told me when he first saw the umbrella he thought it was a black shotgun.
